i play on 1920x1080

would like to go to 1024x768

how would i do that without those pesky black sides

Sometimes you can do this through your monitor's settings, but if that is not possible and you have an nvidia card, you can go to your card settings and look for Display -> Adjust desktop size and position. There you can select the full screen option.

1920x1080 is 16:9 aspect ratio

1024x768 is 4:3 aspect ratio

Unless you want to stretch the image, it is impossible to get rid of the black bars.
