Balancing playing classes

I was originally going to call this "Balancing classes" but people would get the wrong impression.

Anyway. I'm admittedly a mid tier player with some problems with consistency. I feel like part of that problem is I don't have a "main" I can focus on, in part because I don't want too. Thats my issue.

I can't seem to stay "good" at one class, because I enjoy playing all of them. I like playing spy, pyro, engie, all those "offclasses" for the fun factor, but at the same time I want to remain a solid player. I mained Engie for my UGC Silver HL team, but thats hardly a class that seems to earn respect or have any kind of high skill ceiling. I'm having a hard time balancing my fun ("offclassing", playing random classes in pubs) and being good (focusing on one or two classes and working on mastering them). Too much grind on one class just feels like a chore, and robs me of the enjoyment I get from the game, in part because I don't feel I'm good enough at any one class to practice it without getting smashed and utterly discouraged.

Does anyone have any advice? Anyone else have this problem? Or am I forever just a scrub?

Play more pugs and less pubs, find what you're good at/like most in 6s and start playing that one class when given the choice.

Play whatever you want in pubs.

If you're interested in sixes and like to offclass, you can choose the roam life

jk the roam life chooses you #roamer4lyfe

If you feel like you're grinding for one class, well, do something else. Don't keep training if it feels like a chore.

sounds like you should just backup for a team and play everything

I enjoy playing all of them

play all of them then!

if you play scout or roamer then you can do a lot of viable offclassing stuff and people won't get mad at you if you're good enough, like mackey or enigma

if you keep playing you will be eventually good at everything, it's just slower because your attention is diverted, don't be discouraged

Honestly I'm much more of an HL player then 6s, my scout and soldier are *bad*, my only choice going into 6s would be medic or demo and both of those classes feel too important to go into without being fucking amazing.

Every demo and medic player who were/are upon some of the best weren't always amazing.

practice! go try newbie mixes and train in mge and soap dm, and jujump.it if you're soldier

i also feel like you are overestimating the skill level of ugc steel 6v6 teams, as long as you're friendly and willing to improve, i'm sure you can find a team, and scrims are the best place to learn how to play

there is no problem playing all the classes. in fact i'd recommend it because i know of players that only play 1 class and are completely awful at the others and understand less about the game.

honestly the only reason you'd need to stay on 1 class main for this game is if you take a painfully long amount of time to get used to how a certain class plays. This game isn't nearly as difficult to juggle multiple classes at a high skill level as a lot of other games

I'd say try to find the one 6s class you enjoy the most (soldier, scout, demo) and spend like 30 minutes to an hour playing that class, be it jump maps, MGE, DM, pugs as that class. If you devote just ~1 hours a day to that class, you'll still improve at it, and hopefully it won't be too much of a grind to keep you from enjoying it. Then just pub and lobby as any other class you feel like playing to keep the game fresh and enjoyable.

keep in mind that hitscan aim transfers over between classes so playing a lot of scout is going to improve your pyro/engie shotgun aim.

... I actually had the exact same problem as you do. I played engie (and still do) for a UGC silver HL team, and for the longest time I couldn't decide on a solid (6's) class I wanted to play. I finally decided on Soldier because I felt it was the most "well-rounded" class to play, and I knew demo and medic were out of the question, and that it'd be rather difficult to stand out from all the scouts that play to be able to find a team.

In all honesty, the best you can do is just play what you enjoy. Try out pugs with each of the classes to find out which you can most see yourself playing, and which role you enjoy most. If I was able to find a class and a team for it, you can too. :3

Change up your loadout for maximum fun factor.

Almost every class in tf2 has some fun and very different loadout permutation that helps you practice some aspect of that class. (Except heavy, pretty much only minigun haha)
