tbh Valve has sat on arse for 8 years so if they want to start supporting the comp scene they should do their best to alienate the least people, and considering r_drawviewmodel 0 is probably one of the cvars most comp players use on at least 1 weapon slot they should probably allow it.
But weapon skins so iunno dude.

HighclassB4nny talked about Valve forcing viewmodels on stream during the MM initial release. It was stated that viewmodels was one of the only things valve didn't seem to want to budge on. B4nny said something along the lines of "I can sacrifice viewmodels if it's the price for valve to support the competitive scene".

So unless there is information to the contrary, I'm going to assume they aren't going to budge on the one thing they said they wouldn't budge on

I don't think he was talking about r_drawviewmodel 1 when he said they wouldn't budge on it but the restrictions to viewmodel_fov to stop them being crazily warped. Last I heard of the viewmodel situation valve were "considering restricting r_drawviewmodel but allowing transparent viewmodels" but that nothing was confirmed.

Valve have a whitelist of commands that are allowed in mm and they basically only allowed stuff they thought was really important. Given r_drawviewmodel 0 is allowed and things like changing the game's brightness (mat_monitorgamma) aren't, it seems like they think it's important.
Would be nice to have an official line though.

No, it was about viewmodels on/off, although perhaps also about viewmodel FOV. Valve specifically said they want viewmodels on because having no viewmodel is confusing for spectators, especially new to TF2. "Why can he shoot with no gun" "what weapon does he have out rn". I do not know if the transparent viewmodel comment was just B4nny's opinion, or something Valve was thinking, but I think it would be the best of both worlds.
