Why are the tf.tv servers not being used?

As most of you know and can see at the Active Servers tab on the site, some cool guys from around here set up this 4 servers for the community with DM, Ammomod and a regular rotation pub, but unfortunately they're just sitting there empty most of the time. The only times I've seen them being used is when a streamer asks his viewers to join the pub or something like that.

So, in an attempt to improve the servers in some way and getting them filled more often, I'd like to ask if anyone has a particular reason for not wanting to play in the servers or is it just because there is no one in them, and if so, what do you guys think could be done to get more people to play in them. I'll try to forward opinions and suggestions to the server owners.

The issue is the amount of time it takes to get a server rolling from 0/24. From my experience as a moderator for another server, it took some time with a sizeable group of friends playing daily before a steady stream of randoms picked up--and they may invite their friends who will invite their friends, so on and so forth. But if the server community isn't taking up the slack for the first few weeks/month or so, I don't think it's going to happen.

I don't really enjoy myself in pubs any more, but TF.TV has always been a pleasant experience.

Everyone should join that group, I'll try to be more active on it too. I like the idea of playing pubs with vaguely competent players every once in a while.

The eXtv dm servers aren't even full for most of the day so the other ones are going to be empty just due to a lack of people online to play.

It's really just a matter of getting an initial kick start of regulars to help maintain the population. People become regulars on servers because it's basically a place they can rely on playing with people they know/are friends with at some point. In turn, having that initial seed entices new people to stay because the server progressively becomes alive and popping. It's the reason why even 2Fort servers are able to stay full a lot of the time. Despite how old and stale the map can become, there is usually a reliable core player base that values playing with other regulars highly and thus the server is prevented from being empty and randoms don't feel the inclination to leave. Then, in turn, those randoms may enjoy the company and come back and become regulars themselves. And thus, a reliable server community is born and the server thrives in the midst of all the other servers that are technically identical to it.

When I first started my community and server, I remember throwing events which made groups of friends come back and helped start the growth of my community (and actually, those groups of friends started to conjoin with the other groups of friends and now it's just one huge conglomeration of butt-buddies). So, yeah, 'might wanna look into hosting some events, or maybe have the group advertise to come and play. But the latter might have only mild success nowadays, considering how much other groups spam "COME PLAY ON THIS SERVER!" which a lot of people ignore.

EDIT: Using 2Fort was a bad example. Those servers stay full because it's the sniperz_ridge for people who don't know how to use the filter function of the server browser. Replace the above example with 24/7 Dustbowl.

No one wants to join an empty server. You'd have to know that a bunch of people are about to join (ie. via streamers, group announcements). I would absolutely join the group, but it's private. I would absolutely play on the server, but it's always empty.

Pubs need to be 24/7 badwater. Screw rotations.

Also, don't need that many DM servers unless they're linked. If there was a redirect script on all the servers it'd get them more populated (link to same location).

Why isn't it 10 slots instead of 8?

For the tf.tv pub, what about trying to get it on the quick play list?

My gaming time has gone into the ground T_T

I do know truktruk and some of the other streamers have been joining to play and gathering up every few nights.

DrakeMegrimFor the tf.tv pub, what about trying to get it on the quick play list?

That would mean activating random crits... I'd rather have a rarely used server than one full of crockets and noobs.

Main problem with DM servers: the vast majority won't join if the server is empty. Takes 6+ players IMO to make a DM enjoyable, before that many won't bother joining.
MGE isn't the case since you play 1vs1, but also suffers a little from that. You notice that Reddit's usually a lot more populated than MGEiT, because new players (noobs) join empty servers and wait until it gets more populated.

It does have random crits enabled and it does get in the quick play list when the server has I think at least 10 players in it.

Yea, this should be fixed for it to be a public group.

For now I think that we should try to populate the servers when we're in the pub chill mood or have some time to idle in-game, so that we give them the initial kickstart they need until regular pubbers start joining often

Fixed. I forgot the reasoning behind private and doing invites. Updated permissions and other stuff as well for announcements mods can do everything. ( my bad been caught up in stuff D: )

Ok, we should all join the group now. I think fill up groups on steam are the most efficient way to get this server used for now.

I get sad when I see fog's servers empty :( We can't get the 8 slots filled, we don't need 10.

People are going to go to the server that's more likely to have people regardless of whether or not it's actually better. Ever since AG took over the DM servers and right proper threw out everything the original 8 slots did right, it's had a steady enough population to warrant people reg'ing it regardless of whether or not better alternatives existed.

This has remained true up until now despite retard shit like sticky spam, targe, caber, jarate, etc. making the mod unplayable for anyone actually interested in getting decent.
