Editing in game signs

Hi. For the soldier movie I'm working on I want to edit a few of the in-game signs like so: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueWA7Vg0pmI&t=7s
I'm aware you have to extract the decal files of the signs using GCFScape but I have no idea where these files are or what they are called. Any help would be appreciated.

Same. I would be interested, as it is good promotion for organisations and sponsors.

I don't think you can use GCFScape for TF2 after the Steampipe update. I tried seeing if defragging via GCFS was still possible and couldn't find any of the files. Don't take my word for this though, I could have just looked in the wrong places.

You want to open the whatever_dir.vpk files in GCFScape, though I don't know which one has the decals. They're in the common/Team Fortress 2/tf folder.

Also double check you're on the latest version, in case you haven't updated the program in a long time.

its completely possible to use gcfscape to open the vpks that contain the packed stock tf2 files

the majority of these signs you're talking about are called overlays, all of which reference specific files in materials/signs, which can be unpacked from 'tf2_textures_dir.vpk' in your tf folder

the difficult part is working out which sign is which
I recommend downloading some decompiled stock maps and looking at the overlay properties to see exactly which files signs reference

Ah I managed to find it under tf2_textures_dir, thank you.

Edit: Thanks for the info as well @above.

if youre planning on using these in a game demo I dont think it'll work because of the changes to sv pure

I'm pretty sure there's a way to override that with sv_cheats, hopefully it's not too difficult to get around though.

You can definitely override the sv_pure on the demos, I can confirm that I've changed skins with sv_cheats

I did try a lot with the signs though, and it never seems to work. It was my understanding that you have to actually edit the map

I would recommend opening the map in hammer and looking at what textures the signs use

Then make a modded version of the texture

Place in custom folder

Open demo, enter sv_cheats 1 into console

Type sv_pure 0

reload demo(maybe, idk)

Just what I think would work.

I dont know if there is a way to force a demo to another map, maybe the guy in the vid used either sourcefilm or made a custom server and demos with some friends?

If you delete the original map file and rename the modded map to the original I think the demo is playable on the new map (isn't that how "The Storm" got the in game rain effect?). Anyways I think there are easier ways to do it.

I went this route and got "map version mismatch" or something.

Then again, it was with an older demo on a version of a default map before the recent-ish update.
