If you check craigslist you might be able to find a crt you can overclock for like $25. I found a really nice Sony one that can do up to 170hz for $40. It's probably the cheapest way to acquire refresh rate.

iirc people with 4690k's weren't that much worse off than 4790 and 4790k's so i doubt it'll matter that much

Msi Gtx 1060, would a 144hz benefit me with this gpu and cpu? Or will I not get over that fps, also how much fps should I expect with this setup if i overclock my processor to 4.5 ghz

I can't speak for everyone, but I an give my perspective going from getting like 20-30 fps max on a 75hz monitor with a shitty generic mouse to getting a stable 120fps with 144hz and a mouse with a good sensor. Objectively, you're receiving less information or receiving information slower and handicapping yourself. Granted I've known a couple of players who could play at an intermediate level at least with garbage fps etc, but that's not to say hardware isn't important. Especially for classes that focus on hitscan and movement, if you don't have capable hardware then you are always limiting your potential.

Mouse>monitor>keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are disproportionately expensive for the amount of improvement you get in gaming. A 60Hz monitor is like driving with a dirty windshield, whereas a bad mouse is like having a steering wheel made of pudding, not to mention a "cheap" good monitor is at least ~3x as expensive as an expensive good mouse.

Everyone who takes games mildly seriously and can afford to eventually buys a 120hz, but I will just say that Powah played with a 75Hz screen and his framerate often dipped below 120, not only that, he played with 150 ping.

While we're all at it, how much of a difference does response time on a monitor really make? I have an asus vg236he, which is an older 120hz model and I've heard that it has ~15ms more input lag than other 120/144hz monitors. I doubt I can feel a difference between 1ms and 15 ms of input lag but I could see how it could affect my accuracy in "just barely missed that shot!" sorts of situations.
