Massive ping issues

For the past 2 weeks or so, I've had massive ping issues on tf2. Normally, I have around 50-70 ping on EU servers but right now it's really unstable, constantly bouncing between 70 and 400ms. The game is literally unplayable.

My download and upload speed are fine (tested with speedtest.net, I get exactly what I'm paying for, I can watch streams in source quality with no loading etc).

My ping, measured with pingtest.net is also fine (50-ish to german servers, 60-ish to UK servers with only 2-3ms jitter).

Net_graph ingame shows no packet loss or anything like that (I can provide a screenshot if needed).

I'm not playing on WiFi, I'm using an ethernet cable directly connected to the modem.

I have unstable ping both on serveme.tf servers (not just 1 host, pretty much on every one of their hosts) and on pubs.

So what the hell is the problem? Please help me before I shoot myself...

Dealing with bad internet is a huge pain in the ass, just try and fix it methodically. Since your modem looks like its working fine, let's try a top down (game -> computer -> internet) method.

Figure out what you're dealing with with net_graph 4. Make note of it, whether it's choke, packet loss, jitter, or simply high ping.

  • Make sure your network config is right. Comanglia's or b4nny's works well. Put it in your autoexec and restart. I've heard of people who accidentally set their lerp to 400 ms and wonder why everything is so weird.
  • Try resetting the game: Get rid of your tf/custom, tf/cfg, and boot up the game with -autoconfig. Try playing some pubs. If that works, do "host_writeconfig configname full" to save it to your tf/cfg folder, then spit it in your autoexec.
  • Do the same with -default.
  • There's not much else the game could be screwing up, so call your ISP.

I've been using the same cfg and network configs for about a year now, I haven't changed anything recently

Also yeah, net graph doesn't show any choke or packet loss, it's just abnormally high ping... I guess I'll try calling my ISP. Thanks for your help
