sound broken

So the last couple of days I've had this problem where my sound slowly just starts completely breaking. It starts with me not being able to hear the sound of when I pick up a health pack or of taking fall damage. At this point it can usually be fixed with snd_restart, but on some occasions that does nothing and it gets worse. My hitsound (and damage numbers) are delayed by a few seconds and I can't hear enemies shooting their weapons or their voice commands.

Besides damage numbers, the only other non audio related bug I've seen coinciding with these is that in mge the scores sometimes don't get updated live. Game just generally feels really slow(laggy?) even though my ping/fps is fine.

Has this ever happened on anything else, like other games? Maybe your sound card is acting up.

from what I can tell, the problem is localised to tf2. If I have music playing in the background and tf2's sound starts breaking the music is still fine, plus I don't really play any other games to know if there's an issue elsewhere. :/

Since you've said your game is getting slow in general, I would reccommend reinstalling. Especially if you haven't within the last 6-12 months. Grab a copy of Comanglia's config afterwards, it's the best out there.

If nah, you can do a "clear your cache" for TF2:
Try running TF2 without your tf/custom folder. If that doesn't work, then you probably boned your cvars (mat_, r_, etc).

  1. Copy tf/cfg/config.cfg out to your desktop to save your binds.
  2. Move out tf/custom and delete tf/cfg.
  3. Start tf2 with -autoconfig

That should reset TF2's cvars. You can paste back in only your binds within config.cfg afterwards (dont paste back in the cvars). Grab your favorite TF2 config afterwards.
