As far as brand goes check out Walmart for "vizio" I've had one for a few years and it's got an amazing picture. My parents recently replaced their Sony with one, and my aunt picked one up too. Everyone loves them and the prices are usually awesome

tv's (like any electronics) go by brand and price. theres just a few things to note:
-look for 120hz and up, but avoid the words "smoothing" and post process, these cause HUGE input lag and suck for gaming. plus they generally look bad.
-1080p should be a given
-some tv's have different ports, be sure to check out not all have the same ports. some dont have component, some dont have pc (vga) input, some have few hdmi inputs
brands to look for: samsung lg panasonic sharp sony
brands to avoid: "walmart" brands, westinghouse, magnavox sylvania sanyo
like i said price dictates quality. price being not what you pay but regular or msrp. sales clearance discounts promos are awesome.

Panasonic plasmas are almost certainly the best value, but they are stopping production because the general public doesn't realize this. I picked up a TC-P50 a few months ago and it's great.
