I am only random div 5 guy, and my POV is that HL is just too spammy and I also don't like playing against all-time heavy and engie, because playing against this is definitely not fun. Just the possibility of using most of unlocks makes it for me just messing around and doing retarded things instead of really focussing on my game/being serious.

I know a lot of people who prefer HL to 6v6 though. (Even scout, soldier, demo, medic mains) I don't think HL is bad, but for me, it is just inferior to 6v6.

because it is very different from 6v6 and this is a 6v6 forum. people like to make fun of others for being different. 9v9 is a great competitive format imo and it has a lot of potential to become something great. i expect 9v9 to develop and refine at a faster pace than 6v6 because players are no longer figuring out the basics of the game.

from my perspective, i personally prefer 6v6... it's all preference, because they're basically two entirely different games. 6v6 seems more organized, more strategically balanced, and less of a spamfest. Some things are just more appealing to me as a 6v6 player, such as playing with scouts and how much more ability they have in 6s compared to 9v9. The current scout meta is enough for me to enjoy 6s over 9v9 / demo tank / spam / setting up for payload holds / boring sitting around a lot.

This is coming from someone who plays esea-invite 6s and has tried platinum 9v9, so take it as you wish

I don't like playing or watching highlander personally for various reasons, but I don't have a problem with people that do enjoy playing the format and aren't assholes (And there's plenty of assholes in both formats). No reason to hate on it really.

If you want an honest assessment:

At the moment, Highlander is organized chaos. If my understanding of TF2 competitive history is correct, 9v9 was tested as a potential comp mode during the Beta. But it was scrapped in favor of refining the game's pacing, ultimately producing the modern 6v6 meta.

This I think stunted meta development in HL, combined with prize money going into 6s and the ever expanding armory of unlocks there is no real refinement.

Additionally, most leaders can only track up to about three separate things at once. This is no problem in 6v6 because you can track yourself, the combo and the flank with ease. But in HL there can be anywhere from four to seven different elements to keep track of at once, it's impossible for one person to do.

Granted I've never played "high" level highlander but I have rang for a silver team or two and honestly it's a combination of things that I don't enjoy about the gametype. First off the classes, I can't say I've ever had fun playing against pryos, heavies, or engineers. The unlocks have also always annoyed me, honestly no idea why shit like the caber and sodapopper are unbanned. HL is even more team-centric, it's tougher for single players to have the same large impact as you can in 6s. Sometimes that can be frustrating as you can play soldier, play pretty well, and yet feel like you can't do enough good to make your team win.

Because your skill doesn't matter in HL. What matters is if you can outspam the other team, because honestly, the unlocks that are allowed make it that way. They have uber advantage? Jump in with caber and force a pop, always a spy around tell him to take care of it, pyro class just airblast the uber away. So many ways to take care of uber, that doesn't require any kind of sacrifice because of forced class limits.

I dont see it as a threat at all. I do play both though... I have seen alot players come into 6s b/c HL was their gateway to competitive. I started in HL and now I play a ton of 6s (with some HL on the side).

You guys are thinking about it all wrong. Get more people into the game = good thing.

At the very least 9's diminishes the contribution of a single player (1/9th compared to 1/6th). Of course it reality it's skewed towards the better classes like demo, but there's less individual skill coming into play. A good "high level" competitive format should be the right balance between # of players/skill distribution and fun.

I have no problems with people enjoying HL/playing it for fun, but the 6's community doesn't see it as a very competitive format (like the popular opinion on dota2 > lol in this forum).

That's a fair assessment. I'm sure a lot of 6s players see it as a threat because it takes away viewers / resources / growth from the 6s community. However i don't think highlander has posed a threat at all to 6s considering many of the top highlander players are 6s players who only mess with highlander on weekends.

The real problem is that the game mode that is most supported (and for good reason) does not incorporate all of the classes. I think the fact that highlander includes EVERY class is the ONLY reason why it's seen as an alternative to 6s. 6s is more fun in the majority's eyes but highlander will always be around because "look at me i can play pyro/spy/whatever woooo"

The Medic really only keeps track of the Heavy and Demo; Pyro keeps track of the Heavy, Medic, Demo. The Engineer, Sniper, and Spy generally do their own things (build stuff and get key picks). Scout and Soldier (usually) play the flank and try to annoy. Losing a player in Highlander, especially classes like Scout, Spy, Engineer (on offense), Pyro, or Spy doesn't make nearly as much of an impact as losing any single one class does in 6v6. If you're trying to keep track of the positions of every single player on your team by yourself like in 6v6 then you're going to to crazy. There isn't a need to keep track of so many things at once in the 9v9 format. If everyone plays their role like they're supposed to then there shouldn't be a problem and you shouldn't feel overwhelmed.

I don't enjoy it, but to each his own.

- the last time I played, the unlock rules were very lenient causing a lot of randomness and far too much variability to keep track of (so many different sets with different abilities, my head was spinning)

- it seems that, aside from sniper or spy, every class loses potential. Even heavies, who are really important, can die a lot quicker

- there are so many players to a team that it seems like it would be a lot harder to hit your team potential. In 6s, there's always that one player who messes up the push or targets the wrong player (usually me), who messes up the "perfect push" that the team was striving for. With 1.5x the players, it seems like it would be even harder to find those 9 players who are thinking on the same page

- there are constant heavies and sentries, making me feel like a minion trying to run through a lane in a tower defense game

- from a traveling standpoint, the cost of sending 4 highlander teams is, what, 150% of the cost of 6s teams?

- from a statistics standpoint, on any given day, there is a higher chance that someone on your team could have internet problems, computer problems, or other problems that can keep them from playing

I'm sure there are more reasons as to why I don't think it's efficient, but I feel like I'm running out so I'll just stop there. I have nothing personally against highlander, I just don't think it fits into the nice "comfort zone" for which a lot of competitive FPS games are known (4v4 TDM, 5v5 CS, etc). Seems too crowded, both from a gameplay standpoint and a competitive standpoint. And if you're looking for big sponsors to pick up TF2 as they did Quake and CS, you want to emulate some of the finer features that those sponsors are used to (in this case, team size). I disagree with this-- pushing in 6s compared to HL is much more team oriented, defending is too. Transition pushes without any uber also relies more on team work in 6s (roamers creating space, scouts protecting their demo and med, focusing fire, etc.) whereas in HL you can have a spy drop a medic+heavy combo just from luck or chance in good positioning and have the entire situation change. Similarly you can have one pyro negate an entire uber and the whole thing just stalemates and you start over again.

6s is more dynamic, it moves faster, and there's greater costs and rewards depending on what your team does. every pick and every death matters, and it requires both sides to be able to have the game sense to assess the situation, react quickly and work effectively together as a team. HL has so many people running around all the time it's just chaos and confusion.

there is a class that right clicks and stuns you
and i havent even talked about heavy yet

The defensive capabilities of the classes as a whole is far greater than the offensive. The game is not truly balanced for a highlander environment just because some classes are innately more useful on the whole. The end result is a slower paced game with little chance for stellar individual play (outside of maybe 2 classes) to be showcased.
