SourceRes is a small plugin that lets you force a Source Engine game to run in any* resolution, including larger than your screen size.

Here's an example 4k (2160p) video I recorded on my 768p laptop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKdDciQc7k (thnx huhy 4 good demo)

Why?
Lange comes up with fun challenges
This is mainly for video producers who want to record at a higher resolution than their screen supports, and don't want to record at a smaller resolution and then upscale.

Which games?
TF2, of course, but because it just fiddles with the engine, it works on any game using the same engine.
Currently, the plugin supports:

  • Team Fortress 2 (Crashing? See #29)
  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Portal 1
  • Half-Life 2

Not working yet:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (partially working, though not with this download)
  • Portal 1 (Pre-SteamPipe)
  • Half-Life 2 (Pre-SteamPipe)

Untested:

  • HL2 Episodes, probably works
  • Source 2013 mods, probably works
  • Any game/engine not mentioned probably won't work

Install

  1. Download using the link below
  2. Copy SourceRes folder to your game's custom folder
    - If the game doesn't have a custom folder (Portal/HL2/CSGO), make an addons folder and copy SourceRes/addons/SourceRes.dll & .vdf to the new addons folder
  3. Add -insecure to launch options
  4. Mac/Linux not supported right now, sorry!

Usage

  1. Add -insecure to launch options (Lawena has an option to do this for you!)
  2. Launch the game in windowed mode, resolution doesn't matter
  3. Open the console and move it to the top-left, so you don't lose it after resize
  4. 'sr_forceres [width] [height]', example 'sr_forceres 3840 2160' for UHD/YouTube 4k
  5. playdemo and let your VDMs handle startmovie/endmovie

Notes

  • Fullscreen mode. If you switch to an unsupported resolution in fullscreen, you will get a black screen. Use windowed mode.
  • I don't know if there is a limit on how high it can go, or if it depends on hardware limits. I have only tested up to 3840x2160 on my laptop's GT525M.
  • 4k TGAs are 27MB, so if you want to use that resolution make sure you have enough disk space, or use SrcDemo to convert to PNG, which usually cuts off more than 50% of the size.
  • The small font in that video seems to be a HUD problem, here's the eXtv HUD at the same resolution with working fonts: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6635591/t0010.png
  • Dunno what happens if you give it something that isn't 4:3, 16:9 or 16:10.
  • See #22 for a method of seeing the full resolution scaled back down to your screen size, while keeping full resolution startmovie
  • Is Videos the right subforum? I dunno.

But seriously, this looks great. Might use it for recording and downscale it to 1080p or 720p.

Nice work. I'll try this out later. Anyone know where the font size option is in the HUD files of the killnotices?

YouTube is working on 4K support btw. Some partners already have access to that, but I think it's very limited still.

Are you gonna make a tutorial for this particular plugin + the downscaling in sv again?

Ok so I just tested it once. Awesome plugin, but there are a few workflow problems..

When recording 4K at a 1080p monitor, you only see a small upper right section. So it gets hard to tell what's going on, which is annoying when recording without VDM to tell where you can stop. This problem gets bigger when you want to do thirdperson shots. I like to adjust cam_ options to control the camera in thirdperson mode, it's obviously almost impossible to do this in 4K mode. Only way I see this working is to launch in 1080p, play the demo and set cam_ commands the way you like it. Disconnect, hit it in 4K and go back in the demo, thirdperson and record. You can't switch resolutions in the middle of a demo it looks like, the demo starts glitching then (any way to reset this? I think when these glitches happen ingame you just record a demo and stop, then it's fixed but as you're already playing a demo this is impossible).

This is even a bigger problem when using STV demos, as you have to set the camera before each shot and can't program it ahead of time.

Is it possible to see the upper right instead of upper left, so at least you can see killnotices?

So still possible to do POV demos at 4K, and eXtra STV shots at 1080p. But maybe there are possibilities / workarounds / updates possible in the future.

PS: I just tested it and we already have 4K YouTube support at CommFT. So that's nice, will try to make a 4K MoG soon if it doesn't take too long to record.

LuckyLuke You can't switch resolutions in the middle of a demo it looks like, the demo starts glitching then (any way to reset this? I think when these glitches happen ingame you just record a demo and stop, then it's fixed but as you're already playing a demo this is impossible).

Just a suggestion: If a demo is glitching (ie the characters are making sounds and not moving, shutter doors are broken, animations are "gliding", etc), try go backwards a few ticks. The game has to reload the game-state from that tick, so everything gets reset.

Its a only a suggestion though, since it has been a fix for my demo playback problems in the past. I have multi-core rendering on, but turning it off might help depending on your computer specs.

I hope I've helped!

Hmmmm. So I can't seem to make the font bigger on the killnotices. Anyone who can help me with that? I tried almost every setting in hudlayout.res - HudDeathNotice.

Not sure why the fonts are small in one HUD, but the extv one was fine. I'll see if I can find another HUD that people can use to compare against and try to figure it out.

Luke, yeah, this was put together with POV/scripted recording in mind. Moving the window to different corners shouldn't be too hard, but I'll see what else I can do to help being able to see the full screen & keep the full resolution for recording.

flatline, I forgot to mention it in the OP but yeah, HUD editors can get good use of this. I can finally test extv medic info at 1080p with this too :D

Forsak3n, CS:GO is currently fucking me, but it's first on the 'next game' to-do list.
As an example, when I do 1080p, this is what happens. Window stays 1366x768, console & other UI is at 1080p but scaled down, and where you see the cursor there is as far down as I can move it.

Edit: Does GOTV not allow insecure spectators?

Quick update, switching to an unsupported resolution in fullscreen just causes a black screen, you can alt tab back out to windows and close the game.

I'll see if I can make it switch to windowed automatically.

So here's the first MoG in 4K! Thanks so much bluee :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32rXFkVpid8

Defenitely very slow recording and rendering, but acceptable for short frag clips and when I know I'm off for 2 or 3 hours anyway. Chrome sometimes has trouble changing video quality so you might have to play with it for a while before it actually plays in 4K :/ Other browsers seem to be fine.

Bluee asked me to post a tutorial on how to get your game window to still fit fully in your screen even though it's outputting at the higher resolution that you told it to with SourceRes. Side effects include mouse detection being misaligned in-game (aka you can hardly use the mouse), horrible downscaling (very pixelated because it uses a nearest neighbor technique; you can see the before and after (native and shrunken w/ SourceRes, respectively) here and here. Those screenshots are simulated but it gets the point across; in practice it'll probably look even worse.

Anyway, you need to install GameCompanion from here. This utility is used for many other games in order to force a borderless window output mode. Essentially it strips the borders from a window and then stretches it with a form of overlay to fit across the screen. This will stretch with nearest neighbor techniques so if you output to a resolution that isn't your native res (usually lower, but in our case, higher), the result will look atrocious, as shown earlier. After installing GameCompanion, open it and find out what your "Manual FFMode" hotkey is. Mine is Ctrl+Enter, but I don't recall if this is the default. Anyway, start TF2 now with the "-windowed -insecure" parameters (additionally "-novid" or any other parameters, but do not use "-noborder", as I'm not sure how it behaves with GameCompanion). Once it's launched in a window, use SourceRes in the console to target the output resolution you want - for example, to make your game output at 4K, you'd enter "sr_forceres 3840 2160". Then, once it's adjusted your resolution, hit Ctrl+Enter (or whatever your hotkey is/was) while still in the console. Staying in the console is entirely optional, but is definitely more convenient as the "enter" key will probably trigger a menu button, and you'll want the console open afterward anyway. This should stretch your window to fill your primary monitor.

From here, you're pretty much done. You're viewing a downscaled version of the incredibly high res game now, but even though your view is downscaled, all images and videos will be rendered at the SourceRes resolution. You can close GameCompanion when you're done capturing. Enjoy!

EDIT: In order to reassure based on previous complaints, mouse tracking should only be broken for navigating menus and things of that nature. Rotating for thirdperson shots should be okay.

EDIT2, 10 months later: For those of you trying to get this to work, be sure that in GameCompanion's settings window, in the Options tab, you have FFMode set to Type2, not Type1. Be sure to restart both GameCompanion and TF2 fully once setting this option for it to take effect.

Thanks a ton for this. My laptop monitor broke a week ago, and I am forced to use a different monitor as the main one. I would have been stuck re-recording all of my clips that I got before I had the screen break if it weren't for this plugin. Thanks a ton guys :)

This is great.

I have a question that might seem a bit unrelated, but I not sure where to ask. Wouldnt it be possible to create a similar client plugin that would force sv_pure -1? It would be sort of a hack if used in multiplayer, but I only want it for recording demos with -insecure. Even since SteamPipe, demos have been forcing sv_pure and I cant replace materials in most demos and there is still no 100% working bypass to this.

I dont know how to make client plugins even though Ive been looking, but there seems to be little to no documentation on this matter. Even though there is plenty about server plugins, it seems the client ones are made a bit differently and I cant wrap my head around it. So, if someone who knows how to make plugins would make such a plugin, or explain to me why this isnt possible if thats the case, I would be grateful.

This broke in the latest TF2 update, and I'm having trouble fixing it.
Resolution changes, but it crashes once you load a demo.

Contacting TF2 team shortly to see if they can help point out what they changed.

Tested CS:S, other games seem to still work for what it's worth.

and i got no response when i asked about getting it signed :'(

It seems to work for 'recent' demos, but crashes for 'old' ones.
However, if I load a 'recent' demo then an 'old' one, it works.

'recent' meaning recorded 5 mins ago, 'old' meaning an i49 demo; I have no idea where the cut-off point is for working and broken. I guess June 11th? I dunno.

So, if it crashes for you:
- record a small demo of yourself, srfix or something
- sr_forceres
- load small demo first
- load the actual demo

The plugin seems to be crashing the game as of February 9, 2017. Hope you're still up to give support to the plugin, and in case this helps:

- The game crashes right after trying to submit a forced resolution
- Windows 10 x64
- I followed all the steps before trying anything
