pine_beetleI think it's extremely easy to blame Valve for everything but for me there's a lot of other reasons the game hasn't really taken off. I think the financial structure of competitive tf2 is extremely inefficient. There's a lot of really talented people in the community who contribute immense amounts of time and get absolutely nothing for it. I also think the pay to play leagues.... Aside from esea their price points just don't make any sense. Nothing is free, if it's free somebody else is taking huge hit.
People act on incentive, and there is zero incentive for tf2. Both for Valve and longtime community contributers.
You're definitely right, but a fair part of the reason there is no incentive for community members is because valve has done essentially nothing for a game competitively. Very few games ever get anywhere as an "e-sport" without that, and since there's no money from either valve or money from people from valve's advertisements of the game.
You could say Valve has no incentive to support TF2, and directly, they don't. But there is the potential in this game, as much as it feels as if it's being wasted, and that could be huge for Valve. I'm not saying TF2 could become DOTA or even CS:GO level e-sport, but being even a tenth of the size of counter-strike would just exponentially increase the revenue TF2 could generate.
But no new community members are going to step it up with the lack of incentive right now, and I feel like even in it's small size right now, TF2's scene will only shrink without incentive
Geel9I think it's silly that everyone gets pissed about valve not communicating even though they've had a slew of blog posts detailing exactly what they think is wrong, and how they're fixing it, in the past month.
Even if you think it's "damage control" and won't last, the proper response isn't to shit all over them for doing something right lol
i think it's really moved from that to just people being upset that something they wanted so much (comp support + matchmaking) isn't really good at all, despite a lot of updates. i'd really also say that the general opinion of valve's communication is a positive now.
BrenSometimes I feel like the only person who believes comp tf2 isn't going to die. Most people make out like it already has.
i used to feel really optimistic about it but in the last month or two it really just seems like it's going downhill, in combination with top teams/players leaving and valve being incompetent at advertising what really is comp tf2 (not their piece of garbage) as well as incompetently making their matchmaking system
i don't know why the latter is happening (only guess is they only want to promote their kind of "competitive"?) but i think it's a downhill spiral in influencing the former; why play tf2 which doesn't have any bigtime or (now, seemingly) any future comp support from devs when you have overwatch and all the things tf2 doesn't have, regardless of the quality of the games?
obv people will always play tf2 but i think people are more worried about whether that will be in any satisfying capacity or not :(

if you think homophobic parents don't "really even care too much" or that they'll just get over it you really do not understand people or the dynamic at work here
ya probably
vriskim a gay boy with homophobic parents and it sucks so bad. People just tell me to cut them off when I turn 18 and move out but I don't wanna do that because I love my parents.
I think the part that hurts the most is when something about LGBT people gets brought up and they talk about how disgusting it is
if they love u too i dont think theyd really even care too much (or possibly too much but not too long) if you came out
i'm a pretty homophobic person but if my child was gay i'd probably get over it but idk that could just be me
that's def a shitty situation tho
e: what i was trying to say was summed up better by shdwpuppet
BazingaBarry82it makes me rlly pissed that people defend Islam and act like it isn't the single greatest threat to western civilization
ya it's not good or anything but i wouldnt say its the single greatest threat to the fucking west lmao
the most infuriating part about all this is that while valve doesn't listen a whole lot to the community, the people they do listen to are sub-70 r/tf2 redditors with hours on tf2 matching their IQ
sopsthe only one to blame is valve for letting this game get to this point
to be fair the "lole hats and pootis memes alol hahaha fun pootis games :DDDD" theme was getting them a lot of money
-leeTF2 most likely dies in t minus 17 Days, 0 Hours, 22 Minutes, 42 Seconds. + one week extension and im still reading comments on a website dedicated to this game on a friday night
