#70 Instruments anyone? in Off Topic
DjRoombaMusical this coming week and I'm in the pit; oh yes 16 straight hours at school a day ;\

Oh god I remember doing pit orchestra, with horrible handwritten music that's impossible to read, and full of mistakes and really awkward keys. Hopefully they've figured out how to use Finale since I was in HS though.

#14 Instruments anyone? in Off Topic

I've played violin since I was 8, though I haven't played very much for the past couple of years. Music was my life during high school, and I completed like 90% of a second major in music in college. Ultimately I didn't want to complete the last 6 hours of performance requirements, because I was just doing it for fun and the super serious lessons became kind of un-fun.

#3 Google Fiber in TF2 General Discussion

I was excited about getting google fiber when I move to KC in a couple of months, but then I realized that I probably can't get it in an apartment. :(

#25 If you could never play again... would you cry? :( in Off Topic

It wouldn't bother me too much. I've barely played tf2 for the past few weeks, and while I might want to start playing again sometime in the future, it's not a big priority. Once you find other things to do with your free time, you don't care so much about tf2 anymore. Also, you can always just watch streams if you're still interested in the game--I honestly would rather watch invite streams/casts than play open-level tf2.

#9 Game of Thrones TONIGHT in Off Topic

Yeah I'm really looking forward to this season. I really hate that I have to wait to pirate it, when I'd be more than willing to pay for access to the series or to HBO. But there's no way I'm wasting my money on regular cable just to get HBO. :(

#15 cant play for a while, how can i keep the rust off in TF2 General Discussion

You could try to negotiate something like being grounded for only one week, but you promise to do your homework every day before you can play video games, and if you miss another assignment you understand that the grounding will be reinstated. Then just don't fuck it up.

But really, you should care more about your grades than your parents do--it's YOUR future that is affected. Prove that you can be responsible for yourself and your parents might trust you more and be more lenient/understanding.

#5 Random thought I had in TF2 General Discussion

What would be the benefit of being notified about an airshot or something after the fact during a cast? Also, how would an airshot notification be implemented to avoid constant notifications about unimpressive shots on someone who was just slightly off of the ground?

An instant replay feature might be cool, but tf2 is usually too fast-paced to replay something without missing other important things, so I'm not sure if it could really be utilized.

#8 Good UBF huh? in TF2 General Discussion

That was really shitty. If a team is beating you 4-0 and drops a player, play 5v5 or forfeit, don't take a win you don't deserve.

#200 Bl4nk reviewing your demos in TF2 General Discussion

tehmass, in addition to blank stating TWO POSTS ABOVE YOU that he doesn't plan on continuing the demo reviews, almost no one would waste their time doing a demo review of a lobby, or even a pug. If you want to get better, especially as medic, join a team. In the meantime, pug and watch good players and past demo reviews. Other people in past demo reviews make the same mistakes as you and receive the same advice that you would be given. How many times does blank need to tell people to heal scouts and stop playing so passive??

#34 College in Off Topic
phobiai want to go to college, but i'm too poor :(

Don't give up on going to college because you're poor. My parents are poor and didn't save or pay a dollar for me or my siblings to go to college. But I was able to go to one of the most expensive colleges in the country for free, and my sister also got financial aid at a state school because we are poor, and working + loans cover the rest for her. Paying back a ton of student loans has got to suck, but having a degree makes a huge difference in peoples' lifetime earnings (and college is a great experience in itself).

#12 Pushing out of Last in Q/A Help

IMO you should have both scouts pushing out (as SCOUT). Move quickly out of all entrances and get captime quickly, and you don't get backcapped. You need your combo/demo to pressure chokepoints and keep the other team back so the rest of your team can cap.

Pay attention to who died and when, and to the enemy's spawns. If an enemy scout survived, you need to figure out where he is. Be sure you check everywhere, and maybe leave your roamer on last if you can't do that. If one or both of their scouts died early in the push, you need to watch for them, and cap second quickly before they can get behind you. If a scout or roamer died early in the push, they also might try to come back as spy or something.

A lot of times if you successfully push out of last, you'll have a player/uber/health advantage (depending on spawns etc.) if you move quickly enough, and you can keep moving to take mid. If you have people sitting around at last, especially scouts, and especially if they're on heavy or something, that could make it difficult to win mid because they'll be slow to come into the fight.

Keep in mind I'm just a shitty though so correct me if I'm wrong.

#11 What makes a person smart? in Off Topic
RenhetIntelligence to me is:

-The speed with which one grasps knew concepts
-Strong adherence to logic
-Exemplary critical thinking
-Ability to apply knowledge in an efficient manner

I agree with this. The smartest people are the ones who are able to not only learn, but to come up with original ideas using knowledge, logic, and critical thinking. I think there's an important distinction to be made between knowledge and intelligence...it's not difficult to emulate, memorize, and learn facts (knowledge), but to truly understand concepts, theories, etc. and be able to evaluate and apply them and come up with new ideas is true intelligence, in my opinion.

I also agree that tests aren't usually good indicators of how "smart" someone is because they tend to test knowledge rather than intelligence. (Among other issues such as cultural bias in tests and the many very intelligent people who don't test well or don't care about those types of things.)

#24 Tj Lane thoughts? in Off Topic
DrPloxoThe issue isn't "better programs" it's the fact that people break. You can be completely rational, have something fucked up happen, then shoot up a school. It's semi-predictable, but that'd require some Orwellian dystopia shit.

I don't think that people "just break" all that often...it's generally the result of an accumulation of life experiences that haven't been dealt with properly, e.g. being abused as a child, bullied in school, etc. I really think the best way to help people like that is to increase the quality, availability, and awareness of mental health services, and create a culture where it's not stigmatized as weak/abnormal/etc to get help for mental/emotional issues. If people thought of seeing a therapist/psychiatrist for a mental health issue as something as normal as seeing a doctor for a physical health issue, I think a lot of people would be much better off and things like this would happen less frequently.
