#7 Getawhale vs Essentials.tf & i63 in TF2 General Discussion
nazaraget this down to under 200 words and i will read it

getawhale decided not to go to i63, which is in a month, due to poor organization and lack of communication from essentials. other people who are working for i63 or essentials also spoke up about their expeirance with essentials, and how they are not sure what is going on with i63 either.

#2 Getawhale vs Essentials.tf & i63 in TF2 General Discussion

43:56 getawhale says there will still be good tf2 to watch at i63. uncle dane asks why teamfortresstv doesn't want to do iSeries anymore. uberchain says there's nobody left, getawhale confirms it and says that dashner and davidthewin have since retired. uberchain expands on this saying those people "had no motivation or wanted to speak about how they could have done it better but don't want to because it's not worth it financially or for their health"

44:35 getawhale says he did the stream to talk about why he wasn't going to i63 rather than rant, and he does not regret what he's saying. says that wolf did not respond to his message. restates he told wolf, "this is not personal, this is not about tftv, i like you as a person and that's the truth, but i do not think you are doing a good job at casts and events. i think you are doing a terrible job, i am not saying that to upset you". says that there are still people who are volunteering for tf2 and doing good things for it.

OpticSkies says that he hears what getawhale has to say and how it sucks but " if everyone is leaving then iseries for TF2 will die and it’s the BIGGEST TF2 event of the year. That would be a fucking bummer to have such a big TF2 event which we only have 2-3 every year". getawhale says that it is a bummer, but there's nothing that can be done about it.

gemm, who observes and produces for tftv and essentials, comes into chat and says "wolf :D"

46:14 getawhale says he couldn't believe he was the first person in the essentials discord to ask what is going on? there isn't a staff list, nobody has shared any information. says when tftv was planning i58, there was open communication and was planned on slack, but i61 had everything planned in private away from talent and staff. there's 2-3 people who are aware of things but talent such as casters are not aware of anything. getawhale insist that things such as set design, dress code, floor plan, and who is doing what is important to know

console says that nobody speaks up because all the other staff who speak out get kicked. he also says that wolf has started planning by posting a google form to get info, and even that's wrong because he added cornpop and him to the talent list.

48:05 uberchain says that rewind 3 is not confirmed and wade and sami who were responsible for rewind 1 and 2 were run by samiface and wade, who have left. getawhale reaffirms rewind 3 is an idea right now and not confirmed.

gemm says that "wolf's method of planning shit is voice chat meetings, which results in shit not being written down/communicated well. he also seems to prefer being the sole insomnia contact which is fair enough i guess". console confirms he is only casting for essentials now. getawhale asks gemm and console why people are not saying anything and pretending things are okay. says that people need to tell wolf "this isn't okay, can you tell us things?". console says that he and Hiipfire have been particularly vocal but "nothing happens, thats why i fucking quit other than casting"

uberchain says "There are people behind the scenes who are miserable to work with and at a certain point, you cannot keep ignoring your own needs or wants in the name of TF2." getawhale states that he tried to keep emotion out of it but he never got an answer and does not expect an answer, and he's been advised if he does get an answer it will be along the lines of "whatever ok lol"

50:30 getawhale says that the phrase of somebody living in a fantasy world tends to be hyperbole but wolf probably fits it. LandUnderWave says that wolf "needs to step aside and let another group take over, if there even is one" and getawhale says he would not disagree with that.

50:50 gemm says that getawhale is "not a staff member in the discord so there's discussions being had, but not much. there's hard details in there but no real discussion". getawhale says that is his point and it is good to keep people in the loop and all he wanted to know is if they wanted him to host for the event. gemm says "i had to ask wolf like a year ago to be staff so i could see what was going on and realised i didnt really know much more". uberchain says that "There's a lot of people who are keeping silent about shit that goes on behind the scenes, because people still want to volunteer for LANs and for TF2, And they don't want to piss off the people in power".

51:35 getawhale is not happy about the situation, he would have preferred to go to iSeries to see everybody and meet new people, it's just "so primary school. this is elementary school shit." after doing events with dashner, extine, lange, davidthewin, and sideshow then coming to essentials, "what the fuck is this?". getawhale then says the games will still be fine and that people who are going will still have fun and there will still be good TF2

53:05 getawhale says that he's sure that Essentials will still try to put on a great production and he wishes Wolf the best of luck, as well as the volunteers for i63 such as eepily and nuze. "When you have good talent you can get by but it's how the talent is handled or communicated with"

gemm says that they are "still confident shit's getting done its just very hard to have input on the format and things". uberchain says "It's just people are fed up with how things are going and how nobody seems to be listening to feedback or learning from past mistakex". getawhale agrees and says that if nobody's doing anything about it, then he doesn't need that in his life

54:30 getawhale tangents to the state of ESEA Invite in North America and says it's dying. console wishes gemm good luck on production and says he thinks 80% chance of shit will go downhill. gemm tells console that at the moment, he is the only solo observer. he says maybe hamaham but hamaham is playing in i63. gemm says "cant wait to be keeping an eye on jon while im observing too to make sure he's actually doing something". uberchain says there's no way gemm can observe all days of i63, gemm acknowledges this and says "i wont get up in time"

55:31 getawhale continues to talk about the state of NA TF2. gemm explains that during the grand finals of i61 "jon specced afk players in the server for like 30 secs at the end of the last gf while we had super cool stage feeds"

that is everything i thought was important that was said in getawhale's stream. it opens up a lot of questions about what happened with essentials during i61 and now i63, as well as tftv vs essentials

#1 Getawhale vs Essentials.tf & i63 in TF2 General Discussion

Getawhale, who hosted events like i61 last year, posted a tweet about how he will not be going to i63 to host the event: https://twitter.com/Getawhale/status/1022331881700904960

Regrettably, I will not be attending i63. I will miss all of you. I love seeing everybody. I really mean that, it'll be tough to watch in August and not be there.

a few days later he streamed with the title "Not Going to i63, AMA" and talked about what happened and why he was not going. there are things he says in this vod, as well as other staff members of both essentials and tftv, that seem kind of fucked up and might affect i63. here is the vod:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/290038005?t=25m30s

i have transcribed and timestamped what getawhale and other staff talk about that i feel like are the juiciest details of what he disclosed:

26:49 getawhale denies question in chat about not being asked to host i63, confirms he was asked host for i63. uberchain, who is a photographer and writer for tftv, speaks up about how they wish things had changed this time around.

27:18 getawhale prefaces by saying he has nothing against wolf machina, owner of essentials, as a person. uncle dane in chat says that there is a petty rivalry between two people who founded essentials; getawhale confirms there is no rivalry. he goes on to talk about teamfortresstv and essentials having a rivalry during i61 - tftv decided they were not going to produce i61, so essentials decided to do it

27:58 getawhale says that i61 had no communication between multiplay and essentials, mainly from wolf machina. he was approached by someone who had friends at multiplay who claim multiplay was worried about essentials' production, specifically the lack of communication and disorganization from wolf to the point where multiplay was concerned the production would flop, and asked getawhale if the production failed would getawhale be interested in backup production from multiplay

30:15 i61 volunteers such as heny helped make the show successful. getawhale says that on the surface and the stream i63 was a success but he says the production behind the scenes was "not great" last year, and people that were watching and paying attention where he wasn't sure what was going on and was trying to talk to production. he had no idea what was happening

31:45 because of his experience, getawhale felt better equipped to deal with technical issues during the cast over a less inexperienced host who might not have been able to handle lack of communication. there were times when person at the mixer was not there or headphones were off, not paying attention or unaware of what was happening. getawhale covered up the mistakes when he was hosting. normally host works directly with director or producer who communicates, but essentials did not do this with him and because of his job experience, he knew it was not professional, calls it a "mess". confirms what uberchain says about says warhuryeah and getawhale both "asking to straight up yelling at production live on cast at points and your voice wore out by grand finals" during i61 stream

33:26 talking about i63 now. says he didn't feel so bad because last year people were concerned since nobody knew what essentials was, but since then they've done cups and did i61 as well as smaller lan events, so now they probably know what they're doing. says that's what he THOUGHT.

console, who is an observer, producer, and caster for tftv and essentials, appears in chat to say "getawhale not attending i63 FeelsBadMan getawhale realizing Wolf Machina's garbage regime isnt worth working with"

getawhale says he realized several things:

  1. a lot of the people from i61's production are not doing i63's production such as heny who was an admin for essentials, wiethoofd who was apparently fired by essentials, ondkaja who observed at i58 and other events for essentials. he says that the people who have left essentials did not leave amicably
  2. getawhale says a leaked quote from wolf that exists in a screenshot form that said "I have a plan to fix everything, I just need to do it all myself". getawhale feels like wolf wants to do the organization by himself, then have staff show up during setup and he just tells them what to do. console confirms it was a dm wolf had sent him, says that essentials was considering flying him out from the US to do production until wolf realized the flight was too expensive.

36:40 talks about lange and dashner's former production and how there was communication, says that communication is what helped on-site events such as tip of the hats or esea lans, and it does not happen without "a shitload of planning for weeks or even months".

37:38 getawhale went to the essentials public discord to ask if he was part of production. he shows the essentials discord. on may 23rd, he asked if he was staff. june 18th he tags wolf directly and asks if he was part of i63 and to let him know. july 10th he sends a message expressing his frustration over wolf ignoring him and asks "what the fuck is going on?". july 22nd is the first message he got from wolf, which was less than a week from the stream

console says that wolf assumed that cornpop was attending i63 to cast until the day before getawhale's stream "even tho cornpop has said MULTIPLE times its very unlikely he goes"

40:05 getawhale was on the fence about going to i63 but decided this was the last straw as to why he should not go. says he explained to wolf that he doesn't think wolf is running i63 production well, no communication with staff about the production is insane and that he's never ever had to deal with it since 2013 when he began hosting and casting, until now. uncle dane says in chat that he has "heard inklings of this kinda thing from Pazer, who develops Casting Essentials"

40:50 due to i63's planning stage being a mess again and learning and changing nothing from i61, as well as wolf's desire to do everything himself and "tossing away everyone around him that was so talented and helping so much to get everything done", getawhale decided he did not want to be a part of i63. Captain_Smirk1 in chat says to not tell Wolf that and don't mess with him. getawhale rebukes that by saying that people are pretending it's fine and nobody is saying a word to wolf that while he thinks production is perfect, production is not perfect. he reiterates that he was not trying to insult wolf as a person, but it's in hopes that wolf has a wake-up call to realize that he has not been doing things well and should make more effort

chris_________ in chat asks why essentials exists as a separate entity from tftv. console says that it is because wolf wanted to make his own organization. uberchain says that essentials has a personal grudge against the dashner era of tftv, expands to say they pivoted from a hub for all things tf2 to take advantage of the competitive scene when people like Lange, Sideshow, and Dashner retired or stopped being as motivated.

42:00 wolf quit his job to work full-time on essentials. even if he was doing a great job with it, getawhale feels you do not quit your job to focus on tf2 cast, "not even sigafoo has quit his job for RGL"

43:00 says that due to realizing how much of a joke it was as well as other IRL considerations, it was easy for getawhale to decide to not go. if the only reason he was going to go was to be part of a production that was in shambles that might come together or might not, he doesn't want to be a part of that AGAIN.
