TurinThere are approximately 900,000 police officers in the US as of 2014. In the past year (2013) there were 100 officers killed, and 15,000 injuries. That's less than 1% of officers that sustained casualties. However, there have been about 60,000 assaults against officers (not including incidents with more than one officer being assaulted, so this may not represent the actual number). That brings it to 7% of officers that face assault.
Compared to the 5% of teachers who have been assaulted by students.
Not a compelling statistic.

TurinYeah tell me when a geography teacher gets shot at as part of his job description, or when an accountant has to deal with HIV+ meth heads.
Yeah tell me what percentage of cops in the US deal with either of those things on any sort of regular basis.
There are great cops out there and being a cop means you have a greater chance of being put in a situation requiring heroism but worshiping the uniform is really unhealthy and it's what leads to a lot of the dickhead cops that are running around out there.

I think the question was more about the response from the league, not the cops.
