@OP I feel like you experienced what a lot of others have experienced after going to a LAN, and that's awesome! you should keep doing them and hosting more. not many people in the community have the ability to successfully coordinate and run a LAN, and you're doing an awesome service for everyone.
I was talking to some guys today about esports, and one guy (who will go unnamed) said that the secret about esports is that every major esport that you see today is a game that has been around for at least a decade. There aren't any major esports that are brand new games that nobody has heard of. You do have games like Rocket League that are trying to become esports, but I don't think you'll be seeing Rocket League on the main stage anytime soon.
The point still stands -- people won't watch a sport that they don't understand, and it takes time for people to learn the game. That's why the pool of traditional sports remains the same from year to year and games like field hockey or handball don't rise in popularity.
Quake / TF2 has been around for a very long time. People know the game and they have a general idea about how the rules work. So yes, Overwatch may be a new IP, but it's just another iteration on the same game that we've been playing for over a decade. This could work in the same way that Hearthstone is another version of Magic or other card games.
you think the TF2 dev team would be under a lot of pressure to get matchmaking shipped because overwatch's open/closed/whatever beta should be releasing in the next couple months.
i like the idea of this series but i think the execution of it could have been better.
rather than forcing viewers to visualize the concepts on an empty map, you should use example footage that illustrates the concepts that you're trying to introduce to the viewer. in addition, you should cut the audio together to speed up the conversation.
i feel like you may have modeled this series after LoLClass, but if you haven't already seen it, check it out. here's an example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW4SrK2QiOc
i understand that it's only your first video and the first video usually takes the longest due to creating the intro, etc. but if you were to do a second video in the exact same format as the first, it shouldn't take you 20-30 hours considering you just used demo footage + unedited audio. the main issue will be getting players to help you out, but if you can just get them to talk for 10-15 minutes then clip the footage together with example footage, i think you can create a much better product. i'm looking forward to future videos!
