#26 History Memes in Off Topic

A little known fact about Nazi supply lines is that during the Battle of Britain in 1940 they were hard at work coming up with a plan to invade the USSR. The OKB was charged with working out the logistics of the whole affair. They in turn gave a report to the OKW (OKW being the group of generals closest to Hitler, and on paper being the high command for all intents and purposes) that they could expect to reach around 800 KM into the USSR, at best, before their supply lines would completely collapse and force a stop-start war of attrition that Germany was almost certain to lose.

The OKW, being greatly in favor of a war with the USSR, a bit drunk from their success over France, and knowing that due to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Hitler might be hesitant to accept the plan itself at all, decided to suppress the study entirely. Meanwhile, they decided to fake a good-enough-looking logistical report on their own, and present that one to Hitler instead.

In the end the plan was accepted, and if one looks at a map of the furthest extent of Nazi progress into the USSR in 1941, you'll find that the Soviet city of Smolensk was about the furthest extent of their push - which was approximately 700 KM from the pre-Barbarossa border.

Pop history often reports that the Germans had no coats for their soldiers, or that Hitler had made some stupid sounding decision regarding there being no need for coats due to Nazi invincibility or something - but that is a gross misunderstanding of what actually happened. The Germans had coats. Maybe not enough coats to outfit their entire armed forces, but enough certainly to equip the majority of their soldiers on the Eastern front. The trouble was, they had no logistical ability to get said coats to their soldiers in the USSR in sufficient quantities, because they were forced into the position of sending food, fuel, and ammo or sending the coats, and it was decided that sending the food, fuel, and ammo was far more likely to induce victory than coats were.

#10 Any good tips for aiming vs Scout with shotgun? in Q/A Help

Try to hit them with a rocket first.

Also try to keep a rocket loaded in case they decide you can't hit anything with your shotgun and run up point blank on you.

Watch their movement - if they've already used their double jump their movement is less radical until they can touch the ground again and are thus more predictable.

Otherwise, this is purely anecdotal, but I find I get better results when I aim at sprite's hips instead of the chest (which is my instinct).

#39 Wher 2 nuke -_- in Off Topic

Well Fuxx during the cold war, both sides utilized computer programs that would use satellite data to instantly target any location where a plane was detected as landing. It was big business for early IT professionals to try to sort out jamming systems to prevent Soviet or American satellites from automatically targeting your air fields.

Yes syph, you'll have actual legal repercussions from whatever authority has jurisidiction over your crime. But the NFL also has a conduct policy that is part of NFL contracts, so not only are you faced with the same sort of punishments a normal person would be, but the NFL's conduct policy also forces them to punish you as well.

It's no different than an elementary teacher getting hit with some sort of social misconduct (public drunkenness for example). Sure their going out at night and getting hammered may not affect the kids, but their contract with their school will still include a conduct policy that will see them punished additionally.

For example in the US in the early 20th and late 19th century, teachers who were women were not allowed to be married. As part of their contract becoming a "Mrs. so and so" was grounds for immediate termination. The same went for pregnancy. These weren't laws of course, but they were part of the school's conduct policy.

Asking for 20+ million right out of the gate seems very strange for something so untested, but they are really pushing that they've got 30 million people who own the game.

#15 longest you've gone without sleep in Off Topic

~50 some hours, not by choice.
Happened about 7-8 years ago
Volunteered to work 16 hours starting from 3rd shift at the factory, baby momma' cold dropped the kiddo on me, and none of my usual sitters were around to drop everything and come over (at 7pm) unplanned - so I just stayed up to the next work night and did another 12 hours. Then when I got home at 11 am I was stricken with the most profound insomnia. My body was completely and utterly exhausted, but I had a pronounced anxious/tense feeling, and no matter what I did I couldn't sleep, so I just stayed up through to the next 12 hour shift. When I finally got home, I had already put all my ducks in a row so I could sleep the whole day, and utilized a bottle of wine to make absolutely sure I'd fall asleep, and did so around 1 pm once everything was in place. It paid well though.

#2 Average deaths for a roamer in a season? in TF2 General Discussion

If you aren't dyin' you aren't tryin'

There are so many things that contribute to deaths in a game it's not really helpful to look into them for example this little abstraction.

Roamer goes positive 20/10.

Was he just fragging super hard? Possibly.
Was he baiting the absolute hell out of his team and coming in and securing 2 garbage frags after his whole team is dead?

It's impossible to tell just from K/d.

The only time I'd worry about it is if you're just feeling useless and consistently turning in scorelines of 1/16 or you're *constantly* respawning when your team is trying to push.

#11 shotgun pocket = noob? in TF2 General Discussion

I am old and thus prefer even seeing shotgun roamer from time to time. I mean how often are you gonna jump during a gullywash mid --) 2 stalemate? May as well scare the shit out of some scout by whipping a shotgun out on him in big door lol.

#45 What's your dream job? in Off Topic

History has lots of great jobs related to it outside of teaching, you just have to be willing to accommodate yourself to the fact that you will never have much money and that you may need a "day job" at least part-time to sustain yourself, or a money making hobby here are a few, but I should forewarn you that I'm only really familiar with the US's history related jobs:

Reenactor: Honestly a great job for a student, there are historical sites ALL over the place that require people to be on site who are paid either through donations, grants, or public support. You'll also likely learn some interesting skills. There are also whole groups of people who tour areas, do convocations at schools, and charge admission as various historic persons. For example there is a guy here named Murray who just travels the country pretending to be Abraham Lincoln - or folks who do historical reenactment work on youtube even.

Research Historian: Think-tanks, news organizations, historical societies, libraries, some city, county, and national governments, as well as Universities all can employ research historians. You need to be able to deal with, track down, process, and communicate huge amounts of primary source information on a very fluid set of topics ranging from genealogy to matters of state, or business transactions, to architecture.

Archival work: Generally the whole field of library sciences is pretty much the business end of the historian's profession lol. You get to look up whatever you want and write about it in your spare time, or help other historians find the stuff in your collection + organize/preserve it.

Museum work: Museum work, depending on the size of the Museum, could mean just about anything - and it's super easy to get into as a field because virtually any Museum will gladly accept, and train, volunteers.

Journalistic work: Many newspapers and local TV news stations (and some national ones too) employ a writer specifically to do history related stories.

And none of those are being a history teacher - if it's not what you want to do, though it's a fine job in itself I'm sure.

I presently work in a Museum and it's bad ass - mainly because every day is different (mainly for lack of funding for additional staff lol). On any given day, I'll be doing carpentry (I put a roof on an historical (play) house, and helped to build said play house), case design, metal fabrication (to hold the stuff in the case or build the hooks and stands), archival work, data entry, research, genealogy, public speaking, journalism, tours, write pamphlets, administer essay contests, and answer general questions, as well as sell people baubles from the store, preservation, and even calling the bomb squad to detonate live WW1 ordinance lol.

My only other advice for the history field is:

1. If you're socially awkward or have trouble talking to people you really need to work on that because you *have* to develop a gregarious persona to find the best stuff and make the right contacts. Your social role is often one of story teller and you need to hook diverse groups of people.

2. You need to understand your alcohol tolerance - I've yet to be to a meeting of any sort where alcohol wasn't freely served.

#17 E-sports dieting in TF2 General Discussion

I mean if you're just looking to lose weight - upping your physical activity *at all* even just walking around for a few minutes (generally an hour) and changing nothing else over the long term will result in some weight loss and increased engery levels if you're not super low body fat/higher energy already. The biggest thing if you're fairly sedentary (I know lots of gamers are) is just to do a little bit at a time and push yourself to do a little more each day - especially if you've got a competitive spirit, you'll see some results there.

The biggest mistake most people make when adopting a diet/exercise regimen is trying to do too much all at once and they end up feeling totally miserable/overwhelmed and quit after only a few days. Yeah it feels stupid to do *just* 10 push ups, but if that's all you can manage without killing yourself then just be happy with that and try to do 11 tomorrow for example.

From there the next easiest step is just to look at things that add unnecessary calories - sour cream, high calorie drinks with meals, putting sugar and butter on things, your 2 AM fast-food run, etc and cut them out at least some or all of the time. Particularly if you're male, it's quite a bit easier, typically, to drop weight if one is looking to lose weight, just by cutting back on those "sneaky" sorts of things, and then move on to adding more "healthy" low calorie foods..
