I think I stumbled on a Top10 plays from eXtv and saw YouMustRecover in it, who was a semi-regular on the pub server I always played on, which made me research this whole "comp tf2" thing.
I didn't actually start playing it myself until season 10 though..
ymr pretty much got me into competitive as well. i started doing steam group pugs around s7 or so but didn't really get serious about it until s9.
I had to uncheck "hide from directory". I'm not sure I remember selecting that, but it fixed the issue.

As easy as the combat is, that part in the video is kind of a bad example. You get an ability that allows you endless executions for 20 or 30 seconds. You literally just have to keep pressing F and you'll get a kill as long as there is something to kill by you.
I mean, that doesn't necessarily help the combat system out here, but it's still not the best way to go about it.
