just a couple things for people starting out: this game is really bad without pro or premium. I mean you can still play it, but the map selection is next to garbage. Generally the maps you want to play on for duel include t7, ztn, hub, hektik, dm13, toxicity, and several others you'll come across as you play more. With ca, you see maps like t6, dm6, trinity, etc. There's also that one map with the giant platform in the front of the map whose name I always forget.

Anyways, tdm is dead beyond belief for pubs. It'll probably take several days before you get a game going on in a pub. Your best bet is to join irc or get some friends and do a pug. CTF is a little better than tdm but same thing: best way to play it is pug. FFA isusually active but not as much as CA, however, ffa pugs are rare. CA pugs exist but not too many people play them, but goddamn are the ca pubs active. Duel is the exception to everything. Although it can be inactive sometimes, you can always pick up a friend and play.

there's a learning curve that you have to get over, but quake isn't as daunting as it may seem. Don't expect to ever play comp though, besides the occassional 25 dollar prize ones or something. The pros have been playing this game for 15 years.

Where would I put it though? There isn't a crosshair section for the default ones like with hud crosshairs as far as I can see.

I don't expect picmip to be uncapped anytime soon, because lack of visibility is essential to many classes(sticky traps, spies, basically any flanks, etc.). Unbanning openplugin is probably as far as Valve will possibly go.
