The maximum allowed delay between shots seems to be hardcoded to around 150ms, and damaging another player will start a new chain that discontinues the previous.

The update actually fixed the issue I was having with mat_filtertextures 0 (many textures becoming unlit and black). Make sure you have mat_filterlightmaps 0 as well if you want it to look like that.
