#8 Tennis Players in Off Topic

I played through high school, self rated 4.5 as well. I live in Alaska so there weren't a lot of options as far as USTA tournaments go, and the competition pool was pretty small (but there were some really high quality players in it). I use a Prince Ignite (can't remember the head size).

My biggest accomplishment would be going to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch and getting selected for their touring team. We got to travel to a handful of tournaments around the UK (I did pretty well on the clay court matches but got destroyed when we played a tournament on grass courts). We also got to spend 4 days watching Wimbledon which was absolutely incredible (I got to watch a few matches on Centre Court, met Bob (or was it Mike?) Bryan on the tube, Fernando Gonzalez on a street corner, and John Newcombe + Lleyton Hewitt's coaches (Mark Woodforde and Tony Roche) at John Newcombe's house right next to the Wimbledon grounds).

I love the sport, but I've hardly played it in the last couple of years. This thread is already making me want to get back out there on the court.

#44 Steam now has paid workshop mods in Off Topic

Someone got their hands on the paid mods from the workshop and did a quality test run through. They found that with the exception of one of the armor mods (Gifts of Akatosh), they were all pretty shit quality. Bad clipping with models, only a male version and no female version, completely OP and gamebreaking stats, not even implemented in the game properly (either have to get it through cheats, or else it's placed in some dumb spot in the world where you don't even have to find it, i.e. leaning against the wall in the starter town). The location mod included boring cut and paste textures (they used the dirt texture for the ground as the ceiling texture too), absolutely no voice acting for any of the people in the town (barely any vanilla lines even added, you basically can't interact with any of the people), and just overall shitty quality. Not to mention some of these mods add clipping and bugged textures to vanilla stuff in the game (somehow).

That's what the paid workshop represents right now. Shittily and hastily thrown together mods with pretty screenshots, designed to make a quick buck. Sure, this might change over time, but I'd expect a VAST majority of the paid mod market to be saturated with these shitty quick buck mods.

The other major problem I forsee in the long run, is when a new game like Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls VI comes out. When the modders get ahold of the new modding tools, there has always been a period of exploration where they learn how to use it, tweak it, bend it, and get incredibly creative with it. Part of this exploration is sharing what they discover and learn with the rest of the modding community, and this always results in incredibly high quality and fantastic mods for the game that extend its life for years (see: Skyrim, Skyblivion, Skywind). But if mods are monetized, these modders aren't going to share what they discover with people because they want to have the exclusive mod that they can sell for the big bucks. This lack of sharing is going to result in overall lower mod quality, and less enjoyment for all of us nerd gamers.

#26 Steam now has paid workshop mods in Off Topic

I think the intentions and idea behind this are neat (modders having a chance to earn some money for their hard work), but it was such a fucking stupid idea to test this out with Skyrim. There are so many damn things that can go wrong with conflicting mods (even if mod authors try to work with eachother), leaving the game unplayable and people with useless software that they paid for.

There are a handful of mods out there that I would absolutely pay for, and could probably be made in a way that largely does not conflict with most other mods (Falskaar, Moonpaths to Elsweyr, etc). Bethesday/Valve should have just approached the creators of these mods, done a quick run through to make sure it's roughly the same quality (or at least functioning properly with the game), and then put a price on it as user-created DLC. That would have gone over much better because the mod would be worth actual money, and it would've had some sort of screening.

There are so many other things wrong with this, and I'm worried how it'll affect the modding community.

On a lighter note, here's a great new mod available (for free!): http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/65034/?

#5 Comic Book / Superhero Survey in Off Topic

I never have really read comics, but for my birthday, my parents got me tickets to see this show:
http://theintergalacticnemesis.com/

It was incredible. Sort of a live performance of an original comic book series. It was very well done, super entertaining, and super creative. If any of you have a chance, you should definitely check it out.

#7 Internet Data Limit in Off Topic
yttriumComcast everywhere had a 250GB or 300GB data cap until around 2012 or 2013 when they "suspended enforcement pending a potential increase". They haven't reinstated the cap for most customers but it's Comcast, they'll definitely do it sometime.

In Canada it's common to have double digit data caps per month, shit is absurd.

My data cap was 75GB for a while, which was not enough. I'm paying ~$100 for 150GB a month now.

#3 Internet Data Limit in Off Topic
wrechedddddI know a few Canadians that experience the bandwidth cap and I could only imagine what its like. Its a way for cable providers to wring the last few dimes out of their customers for living in an area with little competition ie rural areas and such. I haven't heard of large metropolitan areas having such a thing, most likely due to fiber making waves in some cities (please google if ur reading this come to detroit) and being right around the corner for everyone.

I live in Anchorage, which is a relatively large place (I think ~350,000 people), and definitely bigger than Boulder (~85,000 last I checked). Only difference is that Boulder is near Denver which is huge, and Alaska's total population is like ~850,000 in the whole state. Fuckin' internet companies man, they all seem like assholes. Can't wait til google fiber takes over the world.

#1 Internet Data Limit in Off Topic

A couple years ago when I lived in Boulder, CO, the internet I used had no data limit. I think I was using Comcast at the time, and the speeds weren't horrible and the prices were okay. Now I'm living in Alaska, and the internet all seems much more expensive, and the speeds are definitely better. But now there's a data limit on everything, and it's pretty annoying because Netflix and twitch streams really chew through it quickly.

I'm just curious if data limits are common everywhere these days as far as regular internet goes, or if it just seems to be an AK thing?

#2 Stag Party Open 6s LFP Demo/Scout in Recruitment (looking for players)

These guys are cool, lots of fun to hang with in mumble, and they're all pretty good at this game. Some of them are a bit new to 6s, but they're all chill and dedicated to getting better. They'll probably start out low-mid open, but if they get a consistent roster and have a chance to work on some team stuff, they can easily be mid-high open, probably playoffs too.

Mylo will trash kids, man_animal will do a ton of damage, and scratchy is gonna stay alive well. (I don't really know krocket otherwise I'd say something about how good he is too)

#38 School in Off Topic

I can definitely relate to this. My solution was to treat school like a job. From roughly 9am to roughly 5pm, I focus on school. Even if I'm half assing some homeworks, or barely skimming through the reading, and made sure that I was working on school stuff in those hours. As soon as 5pm hit, I would stop working on stuff. Most of the times, I can accomplish everything I need to in those hours (it took some effort at first, because I didn't have the motivation either), but knowing that at 5pm I was "done" for the day, and could just relax, play games, hang out with friends, etc, gave me a light at the end of the tunnel each day. Some days were crappy and I wasn't productive at all, some days I was super productive, and I noticed right away that whenever I was productive during those hours, and then relaxed afterwards, I was SO much happier. That ended up being a big motivator in keeping with that schedule.

#47 Majors and jobs and stuffs in Off Topic
RawrSpoonMost importantly, don't confine yourself to physics. Learn chemistry, biology, philosophy, etc. It's really easy to focus entirely on your major especially if you're incredibly passionate about it, but you might find that a related field might interest you far more.

Definitely this. I'm in a class this semester called Nonlinear Dynamics & Chaos Theory, which is cross-listed as PHYS/BIO/CHEM/MATH, and it's be fascinating to see all the applications that pervade multiple fields of study.

Teapot_If you're gonna do physics please make absolutely sure that you like and are comfortable with maths. I don't know what the american high schools are like but in the UK you use very little of the maths that is critical for physics in your final years of physics classes - there was almost no calculus involved and was almost avoided in my case.

The maths gets taught separately in your maths classes sure, but a lot of people go into uni wanting to do physics with their naive understanding from what they've done in school and then get blown away by the amount of maths required.

- 2nd year physics undergrad

Yeah at the higher levels of physics, it's a TON of math. You should be really comfortable with differential equations, and certain concepts from calc 2/3 (fourier analysis, etc.), and for some reason NONE of my classes ever taught any complex algebra (working with the imaginary number, i), which is super useful when you're dealing with wave equations which comes up all the time in quantum physics.

blazeitOne more year to go to college, i want to be a physicist. Physics really interests me. Does anyone here know what it is to be a physicist?

Physics is by far the most interesting thing I have ever studied. As far as careers go, you pretty much can only really just go into research and become a professor. Although there are plenty of careers that make use of physics knowledge, but aren't strictly being a physicist (engineering, etc.)
