as for the scientific side there are many different theories as to what causes it. One of the leading ones is an overexposure to the opposite sex hormones in the womb during gestation, you can do a quick google search if you wanna see that
The phenomena is recognized but there isn't really any solid evidence proving its legitimacy more than just a choice. as you literally just stated, and shown in the above Harvard article, hard scientific evidence is nowhere near being found That proves it to be legitimate or linked to biology. Sure there may be some theories or slight correlations, but until there is a consensus by the scientific community I, like many others, chose to stay on the fence about it, or not recognize it.
