#78 Valve, TF2 prize money and us in TF2 General Discussion

Esports crates "officialize" valves support, and if theyre holding off on that for hype/balance reasons then its understandable theyd hold off on esports crates as well.

Its kind of just an unfortunate side effect of marketting really. Existing players would almost always want patches and support to come out as soon as possible. But if the goal is hype and player growth then you generally wanna push a bunch of shit out at once as a major event.

saamalso if valve gave any direct indication that us unbanning everything would result in balance changes and a 100k tourney i would be all for it in a second but they've never said that

Yeah this is pretty much it. From b4nnys comments back when MyM came out, it sounded like Valves plan was to release MM with minimal restrictions and adjust weapons and ruleset in response to the what happens in MM. But the reality is that they take way too long to make changes in this game, so until they actually say that they want to see whats overpowered in high level competitive games then theres very little reason to put everyone though that shit.

The biggest risk i can see people willing to take is us having a few online cups, but people wouldnt take it very seriously without a prize of sorts anyway.

dont you know the pinnacle of strategy is hitting comma and changing class to hard counter a melee weapon.

im happy as a clam that valves showing no signs of supporting HL cuz the meta is really so far outside anything typical for TF2. friends i got to watch comp had very little issues following 6s despite being solely pubbers because the concept of playing the optimal class for a situation isnt really hard for anyone. but show a pubber a hl game and just see how long it takes for them to ask why theyre healing the sniper so fucking much.

in hl you get to give classes their OP shit to compensate for them being garbage half the time. in 6s you have to limit the shit on scout, engie, or heavy because theyre actually spectacular classes when you have the luxury of not being forced to run them in areas they suck at.

6v6 is definitely the place to start

From my perspective, valve probably wont support competitive until weapon bans are gone. Class limits and poor class representation are also kind of a hinderence. Both of these bring attention to poor balance on valves part. On a lesser note, its worthwhile for them to adjust the game mode or classes just to make stalemates less of an issue.

However its pretty much entirely on valve to fix these things in a way while still keeping competitive play fun, as well as not harming pubs, which i think is a worry for them (though considering a lot of banned items are infuriating in pubs as well means this shouldnt be too hard, but with MyM they pussyfooted around a lot of balance changes).

A more posititve perspective is that aside from game balance itself, most shit we need is in place. Comp TF2s production value is spectacular considering its size and reliance on the community. A lot of players have left, but a good portion of them are still in esports and very well may return if theyre given the chance to actually develop something out of it. So if valve is actually prepared to start supporting the scene then all we have to do is just roll with it. Its just taking too fucking long.

pokeyman showdown

i guess theres some time pressure cuz the move timer is like two and a half minutes but the worst thing that can happen is you just forfeit with no penalty every now and then

#14 Things you love and hate about anything in tf2 in TF2 General Discussion

this is like nothing but ill never have any other place to mention this

valve made the enforcer pierce damage resist. but it doesnt pierce sapped sentry damage resistance even though thats like the only remotely relevant use for that attribute on a spy gun.

edit wait i totally misread the purpose

i guess ill say i like comp but its such a chore to set aside time for everything

iirc aside from being an unnecessary fraterate sink, it makes deaths more noticable which can matter with things like spy's YER.

Its really minor but why nerf spy with a cosmetic

Edit: and yeah what the guy below me said. Feigned deaths dont explode.

#30 please ban stupid shit from dm in TF2 General Discussion

Not to mention a lot of pipe hits are due to zoning/knockback with stickies or something else. Pipes on their own are kinda shit.

Trapping in dm is dumb though

the base jumper is banned cuz of the stupid abuse case of jerking off at the top of the skybox

sure, stronger engies and easier spam is lame but you at least still play against them like normal players.

#12 Who or what started TF2? in TF2 General Discussion

it was a high profile pc shooter. it wouldve been more impressive if it didnt manage to develop a competitive scene early on.

earliest thing i know of is i32, from november 2007, a month after release.

i wanna throw out another question. howd the ruleset really develop? ive seen people mention that comp tf2 had tried 8v8, 7v7, different class limits, etc. I cant find much on that tbh.

old forums and videos it seems like the 1 medic limit was established extremely quickly (like beta even). 6v6 and 8v8 seems like they were both the most likely team sizes and it settled on 6s pretty fast. fragile also mentioned 5s and 7s tho so idk. demo limit was made really early in NA but took a few months in EU. its hard to really find details on how much the early stuff was tested and decided on though.

Yeah but this isnt something you gotta figure out elsewhere or even by playing with it. That shits literally written on the gun and works exactly as it says it does.
