Most of the time people are either not going quick enough wall to wall and losing vertical velocity or not aiming their rocket high enough to compesate for the gain in vertical speed - I haven't heard anything before about letting go of the strafe keys to not lose speed other than just using one strafe key if you're staying on one wall. But yeah what chell said we'd need a video to comfirm if possible.
