#214 Origins of Your Name/Alias in Off Topic

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a0/Necrid01.png

This guy from Soul Calibur 2.

I was 14 and thought adding Dark to his name would make my alias edgy and badass.

VortexMarxisttorment 2Am I reading this right? Planescape: Torment 2? I don't know if I should be really happy they're making a sequel to the best game ever or be depressed it will never live up to my expectations.

It's not a sequel, it's a spiritual successor made by pretty much the same people using the Tides of Numera universe and the same design goals Torment stood by.

yukiDid they release a major content patch to make the game go from being crap to not crap?

I played the beta (alpha?) a month or two ago and I wasn't really impressed at all.

No, if you didn't like the beta a month ago, you won't like it now. TBH I don't even think it's that great, I just like the Foundry mostly.

profixI've watched Kripp's Video and it looks a lot like Guild Wars 2. I did not like GW2 all that much. :/

My 2c:

The only thing similar is the combat sorta - in that it's more ARPG-ish, but tbh Neverwinter probably has the best feeling combat out of any MMO. Everything just feels meaty and like it's actually impacting people. Plus it's a lot more active than GW2 as far as using your skills goes, but it's less mobile (since attacking/using skills roots you like normal MMOs), plus there's slightly more aiming involved compared to GW2. So similar, but kinda different feels still.

Otherwise it's very much normal MMO as far as the structure goes - have to PvE to PvP, no World PvP, typical zone quest structure, no dynamic events or w/e just some timed special events. The Cash Shop is pretty awful and there's a lot of things in it that should not be in it (like ability point respecs), it's borderline pay to win almost or at least way too cash grabby.

However, it's not very grindy as far as levels goes, and the Foundry is a really neat idea from CoH + STO refined into a game where it just makes a ridiculous amount of sense. Being able to have players make their own stories/quests/dungeons/etc and have other players do them as leveling content is just awesome in a game based off of Dungeons & Dragons.

#20 What now? in TF2 General Discussion
Spyromancerhttp://store.steampowered.com/news/?appids=440
Nothing about Tip of the Hats OR LAN, but ESEA's fuckup gets front page on TF2's news section.
Way to fucking support TF2 as an eSport, Valve. We'll definitely get new players into comp this way for sure.
Unbelievable.

The news function on Steam aggregates news from several select sites. It is completely automatic and not managed by anyone.

Calm down.

#68 The Future Of Competitive Team Fortress 2 in TF2 General Discussion
MagikarpWhoopee_Cushionlook at us, increasing the popularity of comp tf2 by whining about how DOTA is better supported by valve. /sNick brought up a good point on how Valve supports Dota though. It really does show us the impact that the developer has to have.

It really doesn't, I mean yeah sure, it helps of course but DotA was a much bigger thing than TF2 prior to Valve doing anything with it. DotA 2 would still thrive extremely hard if Valve abandoned it out of the blue once they released it to everyone, as the entire competitive scene existed without them completely for so many years in DotA 1.

You also got something like League of Legends, where the developer has simply done too much. The instant Riot Games backs out of that games competitive scene, it will die pretty much as everything revolves around them.

#25 PSA: Steampipe in TF2 General Discussion

A clean SteamPipe TF2 installation with nothing saved over is slightly more than 6 GB, afaik.

Lawena is gonna need an update, AFAIK it flat out doesn't work with the SteamPipe converted TF2 yet.

dashtmDarkNecridlynadownpournext update will make it so you can further change picmip values right?
right? :D
I hope

Doubt it, mat_picmip used to be uncapped, Valve added the cap 3-4 years ago because the cvar (according to Valve) caused "significant performance and instability issues" and they were having to help support people using it who were having the game crash non-stop cause of it and what not.
people have been using it with openplugin without issues, no reason for them to not uncap it these days.

I don't think the people who used Open Plugin are your average TF2 user though.

It'd probably work better if they uncapped it but also added those specific settings as choices in the Video options menu, probably with a warning if you set it higher than the current maximum that way they're more covered if anything happens on people's awful PCs.

#17 April 23rd update. in TF2 General Discussion

- Added "Only allow map files" to the possible selections in the download filter option for clients *

This is honestly one of the best changes Valve has made in some time.

jp_Curious how well the map download restriction will work with VPK's (steampipe anyone?). Can't I as a server admin make a malicious VPK that includes a map and some furry porn for the hud? (I know l4d2 allows hud modifications via vpk files)

Servers can not serve VPK content to clients. The VPK structure only exists for Valve content.

#23 Rise of the Triad 2013 18m MP Gameplay in Off Topic
mghughlauriethose weapons have the most ridiculous sized splash holy shit, the skill ceiling on it looks extremely low. pretty sure one of them is like a minigun rocket launcher like really

Rise of the Triad probably won't be a great competitive e-sports title, because it was never a very serious game in the first place, but I think the thing here is is it's a PC only old school arena shooter with dedicated servers & full mod support and if the title does well that could send a message to other companies to make more titles like this which could be great competitive games.

If it's half as good as the original it should be an amazing fuck around game tho.

lynaThe game seems like cod but sped up to like 300%. I personally don't like it, blends too much realism with an arena shooter.

It's nothing like Call of Duty at all, ROTT is/was a game that blends psuedo-realistic environments with more parody/humor stuff stuff outside of the look. I mean, there's a power up that turns you into a dog and you kill people by biting their nuts off.

It's cool to note that the original Rise of the Triad was the first FPS to have the ability to aim up and down with your mouse.

#57 What yall think of... in TF2 General Discussion

I remember some people on PLDX kinda arguing if this other guy was a cheater or not: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXQdtA9yyog. Apparently this was the top Japanese TF2 team but everyone they are playing against seems so bad I could never really tell if he was cheating or not lol. Some of the movement he does is really crazy though. (also the Sniper spree at the end is kinda cool)
