It might be my limited experience with mechanical keyboards but I've never understood the hype around them. They didn't feel much nicer to type on and were far louder than what I was used to. Also the price on the ones i've tried (Razer blackwidow) was pretty obnoxious.

I've been using a saitek eclipse II for quite some time but mine has gotten a bit beat up and the spacebar has a large crack in it. I was looking to purchase a new one but before I did that I wanted to see if there were any other keyboards in the same pricerange (~45$) that are worth picking up. Ideally it would be backlit and have some volume controls.

Well what you're talking about is LOD and Picmip I assume? LOD handles the level of detail on cosmetics and weapons. While picmip handles the level of texture detail ranging from -1 (max detail) to 4 (min detail)
From what i've found the LOD and Picmip do considerably help your frames but not as much as basic things like ragdolls and gibs. Even if you were to have LOD and picmip at a fairly high level and you used a fps config things would still look good and you should get a decent fps boost.
