#211 serveme.tf - free server reservations in Projects
Toblove the STV viewer!
an option to turn off the explosion effect would be nice. Or maybe an alternative small static one, like how ppl use the sapper explosion in-game as custom explosion. seemed a bit overwhelming in some of the fights with the current ripple effects everywhere

It's smaller and quicker now.

#209 serveme.tf - free server reservations in Projects

Some updates from the past 7 months or so:

  • Live scoreboard - Reservation pages now have a live scoreboard with match and round stats. Supports multiple matches per reservation and uses the same class order as logs.tf.
  • Log viewer / Web RCON - Timestamps in log search are clickable and take you to that place in the log. Also added jump to line.
  • Redesign beta - Attempt at a redesign for the entire site. It's opt-in for now, you can try it at serveme.tf/beta (or na/au/sea). There's a button to switch back if you don't like it, it's pretty AI-ey at the moment.
  • !ai improvements - !ai can now move players between teams and set their classes. It also remembers what didn't work earlier in the reservation, so follow-up questions work better.
  • Chat command suggestions - If you mistype a command like !extned, the server tells you what you probably meant.
  • Server picking - "I'm feeling lucky" and the API now pick randomly among nearby servers, so we spread the load better.
  • API - New endpoint to get the log lines of a reservation, it's what tf2esports uses to know what matches are being played and what's happening in them.
  • Privacy - Added a privacy policy and logs.tf uploads now use https and strip player IPs.
  • MGE - Switched to mge.tf's MGEMod with per-map configs.
  • Configs and maps - PASS Time now comes in through the RGL configs. Added the spells blocker for the ETF2L Halloween cup, plus GIO and ahh_hl configs. Updated league map lists, removed the UGC ones.
  • Kamatera - Kamatera cloud locations are disabled until they raise our quota. They don't like it when you create and destroy VMs often. Hetzner and Vultr cloud servers are still available.
  • Behind the scenes - Moved all regions from Capistrano to Kamal for their deployments, fixed some ways there could be double bookings, and cloud servers clean up better when a provider has issues.
  • Last but not least, web based live STV for all reservations. Just press the "stv.tf" button on the reservation page. It redirects you to a public page and you can share that link with others. Also available for non-serveme STVs through /stv in EU, NA, SEA, AU.
stv.tf has a big view with lots of info, HUD elements, events and a simplified view for possible use in casts as a minimap.
You can see a demo based on a....demo... here or here for the minimap view.

#41 pedo thread in TF2 General Discussion

11 years since I took that photo of Dashner at i55 and it keeps getting used without attribution or royalties, I could have retired by now.

The creator of the video DM'd me out of the blue the day before it went live, asking why Nursey and sempar aren't banned on serveme. I didn't know who he was, but did notice he has a couple of banned alts and a whopping 3 year RGL ban for "Misleading administrative staff", so I didn't take him entirely seriously.

I explained that serveme's ban list is for cheaters we caught and people interfering with matches, and we let the leagues deal with all the other stuff. Ironically, that same policy is why the video creator still plays on na.serveme.tf despite his RGL ban.

Next thing I know I'm "harboring preds" and "too lazy to ban pedophiles" and threatens to put me in the video. So I don't think this person is acting in good faith.

#5 TF2 Demo Salvage in Projects

Well, I think it's neat. Playing such old demos is a rather niche thing and without someone willing to point their Claude subscription at the problem, it would probably never exist.
Take it or leave it.

Also, it's hilarious how Claude will insist calling projects like this a "clean-room" implementation after ingesting all human knowledge including the HL2 and TF2 source code leaks.

#50 what do you think about ai? in Off Topic
tommybump this thread. is anyone else slightly scared after the huggingface incident? this retelling of it was quite vivid. or AI DOOM narratives all scare tactics pumpign their valuations so the bubble doesn't pop. im curious what people think.

No, that retelling is such a dramatized piece of crap.

it’s stuff like this that really makes me roll my eyes at the pearl clutching. Does everyone have psychosis or losing critical thinking ability?

I read the report because I’m a propeller head and love understanding how things work

1. OpenAI was running an “isolated sandbox with no internet connection…. the sandbox needed access to a local JFrog Artifactory server… (Ask ChatGPT to explain SSRF hack to you like you are in high school)… anyway, the models used a basic SSRF exploit to route web traffic through the proxy to the public internet
STOP..
a) did they vibe up this “isolated” env?
b) their IT team can’t be this bad… this is like 101 stuff …

2. Civilizations? Haha! OAI gave thousands of concurrent model containers R/W permissions to a shared caching directory on the local network to speed up build times… agents literally just wrote text files and directory names to a shared drive….Linux 101 file permissions stuff

3. When people talk about hugging face getting hacked … you think they dropped USB keys OR ELABORATE phishing of an employee … NO… it found 14 exposed working Hugging Face API keys sitting in public code repositories (CREDENTIALS leaking with LLMs is such a big issue but for another post)

4. WHERE ARE THE HUMANS… the models were filling the shared Artifactory storage with so much junk data and API traffic that they actually crashed the internal server on July 4… someone on the team found unauthorized admin accounts and custom scripts…wiped the server…and just turned the script back on (omg)

“Hey Jim there is this cache that has grown to 10000x its normal size and has a ton of strange directories… “

“Ah it’s nothing… restart it”

No magic here. No civilizations. The TASK CHAINING is interesting to me… I guess the future of cyber. Would love to hear Nikesh, George, or Kevin talk about this

But what do I know.

^ from collected criticisms republished on Gary Marcus' blog (admittedly someone very much in the AI/LLM skeptic group).

mitchPick'ems are now live for ETF2L Nations Cup #11. And to raise the stakes, the top three winners will receive three months serveme.tf premium!

We'll make that 1 year.

malyBtw, any possibility to have the progress available via the API?

Done, there's an example in the swagger docs at "/api/reservations/{id}" under the "progress" key.

#205 serveme.tf - free server reservations in Projects

Let's call it the serveme spring update:

  • Cloud Servers - On-demand cloud VMs available to donators, provisioned in ~4 minutes. Hetzner (EU/NA), Vultr (EU/NA/AU/SEA), and Kamatera (EU/NA/AU/SEA) with locations worldwide.
  • Serveme Cloud - Quick-to-start on-demand servers across all regions from our familiar datacenters, available to all users. Ready to play in about 20 seconds.
  • Caster delay slider - Configurable delay on the live RCON/log feed to sync with SourceTV's 90s competitive delay, or stay just ahead so a cameraman can anticipate the action. "cheat feed".
  • rcon maps command - Now shows every map that can be played on serveme, not just maps installed on the server. Maps get downloaded on demand from fastdl.serveme.tf
  • Progress bars - Visual provisioning progress for all server types.
  • Password refresh button - One-click random password generation on the reservation form.
  • Discord bot improvements - Config suggestions per region, book command for cloud hosts. Banned? Use /serveme appeal on the serveme Discord.

Here's an updated list of the worldwide serveme.tf locations.
