I've had this problem before. This along with a couple massive driver fuckups drove me to Linux Mint. GL.

Probably will end up doing that too... does it still work?

performance in ubuntu seems inconsistent at best. every once in a while my fps would drop to ~40 which is terrible. This will probably get better as the drivers become more and more commonly supported, but at this point i dont think linux is a viable option for competitive gaming.

I installed 12.10 2 times today and kept failing trying to get off the open source amd drivers. I tried downloading from the software center on ubuntu, it installed and upon restart I would get to a command prompt screen to login in and it said KGB:disabled or something. Couldnt get back to the desktop to save my life. Installed 12.04 and same issues. I had many many issues because I have a Raid 0 array and crossfire 7950's. I managed to install steam, download TF2 and when I clicked on TF2 to start up, I got an error (cant remember exactly) well TF2 didnt appear to load but I got the Tuxx so I logged in my wife's account and she got it as well, despite not even seeing the first TF2 loading screen. Uninstalled 12.04 for now and back on Windows. Maybe try to dual boot again real soon before promotion is over.

p.s. Fingers crossed the penguin is worth at least what a Bill's hat is....

this is probably because of your crossfire.. maybe you should try only 1 card for now. Unfortunately Amd-drivers are quite the mess right now. Guess it will improve soon, though

this is probably because of your crossfire.. maybe you should try only 1 card for now. Unfortunately Amd-drivers are quite the mess right now. Guess it will improve soon, though

PizzaCro0Ked_on a semi-related note if anyone finds themselves enjoying linux and would like some advice/pointers feel free to hit me up, i work with linux for a living and am always happy to provide guidance to new users :D
Do you have any idea why Ubuntu 12.04 (secondary OS, alongside win7 64) won't boot and only shows a black screen? It's not the first launch, the first launch was fine. It shows an error message with "prefix not set", then would load a black screen but if I mash buttons I can get it into GRUB sometimes. All my friends who know quite a bit about Linux don't know what to do. I'd post screenshots but the OS doesn't actually load so that's not an option. I Might take some with my phone if you need more info. Thanks.

if you can get into a shell can you give me the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg ?

I only have that issue when I very first go into a server, I'm guessing its because its still "loading" parts of the game, because my install is on a "normal" slow hard drive.

Outside of that, I've not had this issue what so ever.

I'm not really sure how the Mumble overlay works in Linux, but I'm pretty sure that to have something use it you have to start it through mumble-overlay <program>

honestly i'd just get another hard drive and install ubuntu normally, i've had nothing with issues with wubi when i've used it for friends. linux can run on a somewhat small amount of disk space (i think the latest ubuntu release needs 10gb) so it doesn't need to be a huge drive
