This is true. I was playing HL before CSGO even came released. And yes, HL is more popular now than 2012 and before

Counter-Strike (also known as Half-Life: Counter-Strike) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation. It was initially developed and released as a Half-Life modification by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe in 1999, before Le and Cliffe were hired and the game's intellectual property acquired. Counter-Strike was first released by Valve on the Microsoft Windows platform in 2000. The game later spawned a franchise, and is the first installment in the Counter-Strike series. Several remakes and Ports of Counter-Strike have been released on the Xbox console, as well as OS X and Linux. It is sometimes referred to as Counter-Strike 1.6 to distinguish it from other titles of the series, 1.6 being the final major software update the game received.

their wording is obviously just a result of sensationalist journalism and not some kind of shot at ESEA, chill
also there are no technically professional players in tf2 excluding b4nny so im not really sure who feels slighted here lol

Yup, CS was made at that time. I'm being technical in saying you can't really have a competitive CSGO without CSGO being released. Yes the community was there from CS, but you can't really say matches and tournaments were being held before 2012. Ergo no competitive CSGO.

Now my Google Now feed keeps popping up more of these articles...

http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/jon-martindale/170-team-fortress-2-pro-players-banned-after-vac-update/
Garbage article mentioning "professional players"

http://steamed.kotaku.com/valve-finally-cracks-down-on-one-of-the-biggest-team-fo-1774298324
This one is much better and refrains from saying "professional".

I mean I don't even consider b4nny a pro tf2 player. He's a pro streamer. He could never make a living just playing tf2. I doubt there will ever be a pro tf2 player.

Players? b4nny is the only professional player in TF2. You could be Invite or Prem but if you're not sponsored and/or paying your bills off of the game you are not a pro player. I agree the article title was stupid but it's equally misrepresenting to label ESEA/6's players as "professionals".
