hi erm i'm new to posting on this site so this may not be labelled properly/precise. apologies in advance :P

so i just got a windows 8.1 updated forced down my throat and there was no option out of it.
so 45 minutes after it's done, i proceed to use my laptop as usual and launch tf2.

the thing is, everything so slow now, it takes seconds for me to open options/advanced options, the server browser takes like 10 seconds to open after clicking on it and after joining servers, it is so laggy and freezy and slow that i cant do anything.

reinstalled tf2 to try and fix it but nothing changed.

does anyone have the problem/know why this happened/have a solution?

i'll appreciate it a lot and thank you in advance :)'

just launched tf2 again to see if the problem persists, it's unplayable now :( i cant even click past the html pop up advert thing after joining a server

Disable html motd's.

Are you using any custom cfg's/huds/materials etc.?

What laptop are we talking about here? Please give us the full laptop name and/or it's specs.

Quick edit:
-Have you scanned your pc for issues?
-Do you only have issues in tf2 or does this cover say, all source/steam games or even all programs on your computer.
-Are your drivers up to date?
-Have you checked task manager and your AV for programs that eat up system resources?
-Do you have multiple anti viruses?

Looking through these things would be a good start of things to check as this will eliminate a lot of the possible options to prevent us from playing the guessing game.

Someone else I tried to help notice some poor performance after a windows 8.1 update: http://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/2r2958/windows_81_is_super_laggy_on_steam_games/

I'd recommend updating BIOS, updating video and CPU drivers. Windows 8.1 did have some architecture changes which some computers needed updates for.

@Twisted

Okay so in the process of me trying to fix my tf2, i deleted all my custom configs/huds, completely reinstalled tf2, validated the files, reinstalled steam, restarted my computer. Everything i could think of.

regarding each question,

#1. i don't really understand what you mean by scanning it for issues. do you mean via an antivirus scan or some other software?

#2. i tried csgo and it works perfectly, no stupid lag and freezes, works as per normal

#3. i'm not very IT savvy, so i'm not sure how to check this and its relevance/importance
EDIT i ctrl+x and scanned the display adaptors for updates (the AMD radeon and intel thing) and both stated up to date

#4. the main thing i had open was tf2, nothing else, so AFAIK tf2 was the only one taking up resources

#5. i recently refreshed my laptop due to a series of stupidity, so i lost all my applications and haven't bothered to install any antiviruses other than the mcafee which came when the laptop was bought

i screenshotted the page with my pc specs and uploaded it to imgur: http://i.imgur.com/4AB0fh4.jpg
i got this laptop in feb 2013 so it isnt too old i guess

edit: oh and the html motd thing was just an example, everything from opening the browser list, options menu to even closing the game from main menu just kills me. game is currently unplayable

edit 3: i decided to poke around and check if all my stuff was up to date, processer software up to date, display adapters up to date etc. i really dont know what the problem is :(

I assume you don't have any odd launch options, are you running your game in dx9 as compared to dx8 before or anything similar?

Yeah fuck microsoft, i'm glad you got it working though

Just a tip for anyone else still on windows 8, you can disable the annoying 8.1 nag popup by uninstalling a particular update, it's fairly simple. Just google it for specifics. Hopefully this will save some other people an issue like this in the future.
