TF2 Freezing

So recently (as of yesterday) my tf2 has been freezing every once in a while. It's about every 30 seconds or so and it just stops for about half a second to a full second and its starting to bother me. I haven't changed anything in my configs and my computer has perfectly fine temperatures and memory usage. I usually have like 300 fps and the fps stays the same it just freezes. If anyone has any ideas or solutions please help. I'd like to get this fixed before GXL.

Could be HDD related (either the one steam is on, or TF2 is on, or both). Had a similar issue when I used one of those WD green drives for my steam + TF2 install. Do you have any other hdds you can test?

Nah I just have the one. I still have a shitload of space on it too. Like 300gbs or something. I'm not a computer person so it could still be the problem.

It's not a capacity issue; it's the read and/or write speed of the drive. The only thing I can think of is HDD. It was time I updated my PC a few years ago when I had the issue, and I replaced everything bar HDD - issue still remained until I bought a WD Black HDD.

I now have both steam and TF2 on my SSD with no issue. gl

You could always use a SMART analysis tool for your HDD
I recommend crystaldiskinfo; doesn't require an install and is free.
http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html
Get the Shizuku Edition.

Look for reallocated sectors, uncorrectable sectors

Alright besides the anime (I hate anime why Dave) but anyway what am I looking for. I'm not a super smart computer person and most of this means nothing to me. I'm gonna need some guidance

Red_Alright besides the anime (I hate anime why Dave) but anyway what am I looking for. I'm not a super smart computer person and most of this means nothing to me. I'm gonna need some guidance

where does anime come in
it's literally named "Shizuku Edition" on the website; I literally googled "windows SMART hdd tools"

Just run diskinfo.exe and look at the raw values and post them. Because you may have bad sectors; I had a drive die on me last year (tf2 was freezing too, go figure) because of that.

I was going to ask how the fuck that side thingey popped up but then I realized you didn't open the right exe file

anywho, what we're concerned with here is the raw value column. Each value is in hexadecimal (you can convert here (http://www.binaryhexconverter.com/hex-to-decimal-converter)

Everything seems fine sofar (even the read errors; it's a seagate drive, so read errors are ACTUALLY reported. You have 128562408. This can be disregarded)

Can you scroll down so I can see the write error rate and uncorrectable sector counts?

36 reallocated sectors
not good you most likely need a new hdd

Marley36 reallocated sectors
you need a new hdd, more than one is a problem, more then 10 you need a new hdd

that's not how you read a SMART report, Marley. The RAW VALUE displays the actual number. You should only be concerned if the current (normalized value) drops below the threshold value, THEN SMART attributes that as a "failure".

raw hexadecimal value = actual number of whateverthefuck you're looking at

if this wasn't true, he would've only had the drive powered on for 92 hours, when it clearly states that the power on hours is 7560hrs. In the raw value column, it gives a hexadecimal value of 1D88, which is 7560 [(1*16^3)+(13*16^2)+(8*16^1)+(8*16^0) = 7560].

Your drive seems fine...
Unless it's fragmented (cmd>defrag c: -a and check your fragmentation, but I doubt that's even related), it's probably something else.

You could try adding these cvars to your autoexec and restarting tf2:

cl_loadondemand_default 0
possibly changing snd_mixahead (if you messed with the cvar's value and changed it beforehand)
snd_async_fullyasync 1

None of that stuff seems to work. It's not a huge problem but it does hinder my play a bit. So if anyone has any other ideas..

i actually have the same problem, and it's only started happening recently. doesn't matter if i have 90 fps or 500 fps, it just periodically happens. i haven't uninstalled/installed/updated anything software or driver related and i haven't changed anything in my configuration files. it only happens in tf2. i'm using an SSD but since tf2 is the only game i get these short hangs/stops, i doubt the issue is my SSD?

Hmmm, well I'm not going to lie to you--I'm stumped.

I guess all I can say is verify your cache/defragment, but honestly I don't think that'll do much good...

Maybe its some sort of bug thing. If anyone else has this problem then hopefully it is something like that.

Red_Maybe its some sort of bug thing. If anyone else has this problem then hopefully it is something like that.

It could be a bug. I've had the same freezing / stutter problem for a few weeks now. It only happened after a fairly large update for TF2, and it only occurs in TF2 and CSGO, every other game runs perfectly fine (which makes me think its something with an update to the source engine). I've tried almost every fix I could find but nothing has worked so far.

I would just like to say im having the same issue so its no faults with your computer!, i swapped my game from my HDD to my SSD, the full second freezes turned into .5s freezes, still there and still annoying but yea, cl_loadmodelsondemand never helped, and it seems to have transitioned to other source mods aswell (i'm a previous developer of a mod and this issue has transitioned over to that mod aswell, which is really goddamn annoying as these are the only two games i really play)

Here is hoping valve fixes this soon :)

I've got the same problem and it really only happens when the message that someone joined my game pops up. It still happens occasionally though if nobody is joining. Think it started about a month ago.

Edit: I've also had it happen when the message that someone beat the map in the jump server I play in pops up. No other chat messages though.

cl_loadondemand_default 0 mat_queue_mode -1 Apparently these work for some people. Try it out
