Could anybody from i46 participants tell me how did they get their PCs through TSA? Because I'm flying back to Europe and want to take my desktop on board. But I read everywhere that you have to turn it on to prove it's working. Is that true?

As someone visiting another country for a month and looking to take my desktop, I would also like information on this.

i brought my laptop to i46. they didnt make me turn it on, they just made me take it out and wiped it down with some bomb detecting thing. was pretty simple.

I actually wanted to take it with me as a carry-on luggage.
I would just take everything from the case and put it in a bag. Then once I would get to Scotland I would buy a case, PSU and a monitor.

We rented desktops at I46, but I did take my monitor as carry on. It barely fit in my suitcase, which barely fit in some overheads. Went through 3 airports and only had to take it out of the suitcase at one.

I think it depends on the TSA person. Last year I even set off the metal detector and they just waved me passed.

It also helps to throw down a little extra cash for a first class ticket. There seem to be unspoken perks among TSA type regarding those who seem like gentlefolk of leisure. I was waved through despite 4 false positives...the woman with the two small children standing behind me was treated like a dangerous felon.

Ive moved with a desktop both internationally and domestically. I had it under the plane both times and it broke 2/2 times. I ship through Fedex/UPS now despite the ridiculous cost.

It costs like $600 just to fly one-way asshole

No smart person would drop $5000+ to get their ass kissed by customs/TSA

ive never done it personally, but several friends of mine have flown with PCs. Thrickstr came to the atlanta lan with his PC on the plane last time, i think he just packed it in a large piece of luggage and checked it. This is crazy risky, but luckily his PC made it just fine.

Thursday came out to philly for the GXL a few years ago and he broke down his computer into pieces, repacked them into the boxes they came in, packed them in his carry on, and rebuilt the system into an extra case I had when he got here.

I think your best bet is a combo of those 2 ideas. if you dont have the original boxes for the hardware just find some cardboard boxes that are the right sizes, and get a bunch of bubble wrap. Take this as carry on. If you need to take the monitor as well, walmart sells a cheap piece of luggage ($20) thatll fit a 22" LCD, just pack pillows around it. pack the empty case in a large piece of luggage or box and check it.

In any case, I'd recommend filling the case with expanding packaging foam. It comes in a self-containing bag which expands and conforms to the shape of the innards of your system. Instapak or Flashpac come to mind. You can probably find it at Lowe's or Home Despot.

You can probably also find a thicker, denser foam to secure to the corners of the case, then it *should* be adequate for carry-on.

Oke, so i've flown a few time to insomnia from amsterdam to either gatwick or Birmingham airport as a carryon.

i got a few weird looks, but as long as your PC is under the maximum weight/size, thats all you're gonna get. maybe an extra drugs check or some shit like that, but ye.

for i40, i flew with my midtower case (fractal design r2) and stuffed it with all kinds of crap (weighted like 23kg in the end), but british airways weight/size limits were pretty fucking awesome (not sure how they are now), for i43/45/46 i got a super small alluminum case because KLM is shit and has like a 12kg weight limit.

either way, if its within specs, you can pull it off, just make sure to show up like 3 hours early at the latest!

TSA was mostly OK, except granny behind the screen was like "WTF is that a bomb?" So I was taken to closer inspection by other female TSA agent and I had to explain that it's not a bomb but computer parts, she was blonde and therefore dumb so it took me a while to convince her. But in the end she let me go.
