PC Problem

I've just finished building my PC, and when I booted it up everything seemed to be working, but the monitor says it's not receiving any signal from the PC. I tried plugging my laptop in and the monitor is worked perfectly, so the problem must be my motherboard. Is there anything I can do to know for sure what the problem is or even fix it? The motherboard is MSI B85-G41 PC Mate
I know absolutely nothing about these things so any help is welcome

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I'm assuming you have a video card: is the monitor plugged into the video card, or the motherboard? If you have a video card then the motherboard won't output anything, something I overlooked on my first PC.

Yeah I have a video card. I never knew you plugged the monitor into the video card event though it seems so obvious now. Thank you.
Also another thing, my video card doesn't have a vga input on it, do video cards only take dvi/hdmi, or is my card just different? Sorry for sounding like a complete idiot

newer video cards only take displayport, hdmi, or dvi. depends on the model.

Most video cards come with an adaptor for DVI to VGA, and if it didnt you can grab one for really cheap on monoprice/ebay/amazon etc
