Windows stops responding when I open file explorer

Just as the title says. Yesterday when I launched my pc it was working fine, but all my tabs randomly started loading endlessly. Soon after I opened my file manager and was met with no response, eventually after a little bit I got a message saying windows has stopped responding and only had the option to end the program. After windows resets everything is back to “normal” except whenever I right click, open file explorer or open something that has to do with file explorer (I can open discord, mumble, steam, and some other things fine but some just break windows) it stops responding again. I have tried troubleshooting for the past day with no success, if anyone has any idea how to fix this it would be appreciated.

Thank you!

have you downloaded any programs recently? something on your pc may be causing the crash. you said that some programs cause your pc to be unresponsive

1) is your windows updated?
2) if you have CCleaner maybe try doing a registry scan for any issues?
3) you can check this site and try any troubleshooting problems you haven't done already

if all else fails you can try windows repair to see if that makes a change. if that doesn't help then you might need to reinstall windows, or your hard drive might need to be replaced
