HELLO FRIENDS
For the next Tip of the Hats charity event (likely to be hosted around the same time next year), most of our immediate changes are directed towards prizes, and encouraging an even larger set of players to donate.
So, we had the idea of having a small set of items (most likely 1-3, much like the Japan relief items) made that can be purchased from the in-game store for a limited time. Thanks to talks with Ruskeydoo (creator of all of the league medals and a few other various items) and Eric Smith (a member on the TF2 team), we've found that our biggest hurdle appears to be coming up with the actual items.
We're appreciative of all ideas, but we're most likely aiming for an all class hat, misc, some sort of all-class melee (similar to the ham/pan), or a medal. What we aim to do is take a selection of ideas and have people vote for the ones they like the most. Then, we will concept the item (thanks to Renhet) and submit the ideas to Valve for consideration. If they're fine with the items, Ruskeydoo has offered to model the items. They'll be put on the Workshop where we'll need your help voting them up.

This is a great idea! If only a small amount of these items is made and they are raffled at TotH2 there is a good chance that they will become insanely valuable! I'm sure it would make a lot of players participate. I'll see if I can come up with anything interesting and if I or anyone have/has a good idea I could shop or even model some concept versions of it to have something to look at.

The hat idea is good.
I feel like the ribbons aren't a good idea simply because it'd be yet another misc item that overlaps the medal body slot which means not too many people would actually wear them I think, plus people are way more picky about their misc items instead of their hats in my experience.
Go for hats or special reskinned weapons (if possible).

While your first idea is distasteful to say the least, the thought of using the ribbons as numbered badges is a good one. This should be considered.

I get it would be kind of difficult to animate, but I still think it would be very cool.
Or it doesn't have to be a taunt. It could be an misc that adds something to the voice command list, except it's a small animation (still tipping the hat) and not a line of dialogue.

I think a badge for ALL players who donate would be nice, a 1 of 1 special hat for the donor who donated the most, and a couple other limited edition hats to raffle off. What they would be I have know idea.

Alternately, just a pair of hats standing up against each other on the head, so they're both, uh, tipped.

if we are able to get something into the valve store, it should have a tf.tv logo on it. that way people who dont know about this site might discover it and get into the competitive scene. raise money for charity, while promoting this site and comp TF2. its a win win situation.
