Bethesda Softworks has announced Wolfenstein: The New Order for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-gen consoles. The reimagined take on the classic first-person shooter is under development at MachineGames and set in an alternate universe during the 1960s. The game will goose-step into retail during the final quarter of 2013.

"As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud," said Jens Matthies, creative director at developer MachineGames. The studio was founded in 2009 by a group of Starbreeze Studios vets. It was purchased by Bethesda parent company Zenimax Media in 2010.

One of gaming's most iconic first-person shooter franchises will be revived later this year when Bethesda releases Wolfenstein: The New Order. The publisher announced the title today, tentatively setting a Q4 2013 shipping timeframe for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next generation consoles. According to Gamespot, The New Order's story will take place in 1960s Europe; players will again assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz as he wages war against Nazi forces. As the announcement trailer makes clear, however, the latest Wolfenstein isn't exactly grounded in reality. You'll be battling against and attempting to commandeer Nazi "super weapons," which include massive, weapon-toting robots by the looks of it. That's all we know so far, but we should have a much better understanding of Wolfenstein: The New Order by the end of this week; Gamespot will be releasing additional details on the game each day. In the meantime, catch the announcement trailer below.

I hope they keep the occult twist from the earlier games. However, the trailer makes it seem like the Nazi's are just another highly technologically advanced society.

I don't care about the story. Here's to hoping for a new Wolfenstein: ET.

Wolfenstein (2009) wasn't that good, so hopefully this one is much better.

I don't think any Wolfenstein game will ever match RTCW or ET, though.

Those screenshots remind me of the last level in RAGE. Looks good. For someone who has never played Wolfenstein, how much of a big deal is the lack of multiplayer going to be?

Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory was the first FPS I have played in my life and I played it 5 years non-stop, it's my favorite game of all time and a big part of my childhood, it's how I fell in love with gaming and everything tech related. Jimi Hendrix on the other hand, is my favorite musician and guitarist of all times, I can't even begin to process how good this video felt for me!

That being said, I still love Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory more than any other wolfenstein game they launched after it, that game was everything that's right in FPS's, awesome mechanics, class based, team based, great maps, great weapons and addicting as hell, shame it died down :(

Can we talk about how good that trailer was? I hate videogame trailers that don't show gameplay, I hate most trailers in general, but this one got me psyched.

Look at all of that stupid photoshop post-processing. BF3 was blue and bloom, this will be grey and fog. I'm really disappointed because the Rise of the Triad remake is making slow progress and I had the slightest glimmer of hope that this would somehow be different than the usual console gamer fanfare despite the console releases.
