Sudden FPS drop when players are on screen

As the title says, I am suffering terrible FPS drops on TF2 when players are on screen. As I understand, TF2 is a CPU intensive game, and I have an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, a more than capable CPU. Even with all settings on low (maxframes configs and the like), my framerate falls to around 40-50 when players are on screen. Inversely, it maxxes out at my cap (144) when i'm staring at a wall or the ground, or in offline mode. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is - only a couple weeks ago I was getting 144 frames absolutely consistently, as I have been for the past three years. Any help appreciated, no clue what has caused this. Task manager says everything is normal - is it bottlenecking?

check if you gpu is being utilized, it might be in some chill mode (low clocks), because tf2 doesnt demand much

  • What mods do you use?
  • Have you checked your frame pacing?
  • Have you tried any anti screen tear technology? (Vsync, FreeSync, Gsync.)
LufgtKatya Even with all settings on low (maxframes configs and the like)

I recommend using mastercomfig; maxframes is old and doesn't account for modern TF2 updates.
