So you have a video file in some format and are attempting to play it with VLC using an HDMI cable from your computer to the TV, right? This should work with no issues. What's happening when you try and play the movie? Do you get any video out on the TV?

the issue is the even though the video displays on the computer, it requires me to move the video to the far left on the computer, for it to be properly displayed on the tv, and then it's shows the font and overlay, but when I go full screen on the computer, it doesn't display the video at all.

Try disabling your PC monitor and using the tv as the primary/only monitor instead of extending it
