RigelI'll be going on an IT internship starting in January. Any tips? what's it like? I've heard you do a whole lot of nothing until everything crashes. How much coding were you involved in, if any, and how much maintenance is required?

It kinda depends on the company. I worked for OU and we had a separate department that worked on the students computers so we worked exclusively on network itself. We really had 3 departments, two departments were all student labor (comp repair and installation of cat 5 lines) and the real IT department in which we were salary.

To answer the questions as much as I can from that POV, it's true that you have some times that you are doing nothing. While there is always 100 things that need to be done, it's always something that pushed back until tomorrow. It really depends on your work ethics, since it's easy to seem like you are busy when (if) anyone walks into your office. But when things go wrong, it was always our fault. I personally didn't have to do much coding since there was another person that was much better than me, so he handled all the real coding. Most of what I had to do was just pushing his coding to APs and the such. There is quite a bit of maintenance, daily, weekly, and monthly, but as I said before, some things don't always have to be done right then. Doing them often will help in the long term. There is nothing worse than having to drive in the middle of the night to switch out an UPS battery.

I would suggest learning coding honestly. There is always good money and jobs for good coding.

NoonaTo the people that don't know you personally and never will, how would you want to be known by them?

I don't think about it really. I don't think that it matters too much. The one thing that I wouldn't like to be known as is an asshole/rager/troll.

fsXDDo you feel that going on to finish your PhD has helped you in finding work at all?

I doubt that it will ever help me. When I started I thought it would, but at this point I just want to finish it. Honestly, it depends on your major, sometimes it is required.

Yankeeblack coffee, or with cream?

With cream and no sugar.

erkstonif you could go back in time and change one thing, what type of poptarts would you buy exclusively?

Never was a fan of them

loljkFuck, kill, marry?

What are the options

Having all the experience you do with stress and unhappiness, how, nowadays, do you deal with those things when they show up again (whatever form they may take)?

I don't think that I do deal with it very well. It's one of the main reasons that I drink, but I can tell you it's worse when you have time to think about it. My first advice would be to keep busy at first and see a professional early rather than later.

I've recently turned 20 and live with a lot of things in life that friends and outsiders have called "unfair", but I haven't found anything I can do or say about my circumstances to be satisfying or bring me happiness. When I deal with things now I tend to emotionally shut down and view everything very logically until it's over, and frequently find myself falling back on escapism (video games, talking with friends, music, w/e).

I understand that completely, since I am/was the exact same way. Most people consider me "cold or too blunt" since I am honestly unable to empathize with people a lot. Talking about it with friends is very helpful and you should continue to do so. It's probably not the best idea to use anything to escape from it since you will never truly be able to and it can lead to later problems. I do have a lot more to add but I feel like the best thing I can do to actually help is for you to add me and talk about it more personally. I have an idea what you're referring to, but it's better to help with specifics. If you rather have me type it out here, just say in this thread and I will add more to it.

I want the view of another person who knows what it feels like to have really bad things in their life that they just can't get rid of, so they just deal with it. (Or more accurately, I feel, just continue existing with it.)

What's your dissertation on? I'm just starting mine, and I'm really excited about it, but I often wonder if I'm wasting my youth by being in school, libraries, behind books and computers all the time. Do you ever second-guess your commitment to higher education?

What factors did you consider when picking a college? Basically just curious why you went to whatever college you went to.
