In my poverty, I have a netbook I use for general on-the-go work and some games. However, this thing is clockin' in the years. I hopped onto newegg to do price checks and see what stock they had, and there were four items left with three being out of stock. Are netbooks being phased out in the face of tablets? I have an ASUS TF-300T tablet but I enjoy a certain number of features that netbooks have (mainly a physical harddrive, usb ports, and some semblance of airflow), plus I'd rather spend the money on that instead of half the price just to get a keyboard dock with one usb port for the ol' TF-300T.

One of my friends and one of my professors from my old CC picked up a Microsoft Surface each and I was thinking about getting one of those but that pricetag is a bit too much for me (but with what I was shown and what I tried on it, I think it's justified). I'm not interested in a Chromebook because I'd like to have something I can horse around on.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Netbooks died a pretty quick death when the iPad came out. Depending on your price range you might can get a budget full-size laptop used.

Just thought i would say the surface is amazing. My mom has one, and it truly is just like a small computer.

Lenovo do some nice 11.6" Thinkpads for "education", which means they're not fancy in terms of design but are built quite ruggedly. They're good once you get used to using the Trackpoint since the touchpads are poor.
