Hey, looking to purchase my first laptop. I read the previous laptop threads on here, but decided to open up another as they didn't really match my needs.

•$650 budget
•Doesn't need to run heavy games
•Would prefer a larger screen
•6gb minimum
•Planning on running linux or win8, but probably linux
•apparently haswell CPU's "increase battery life by fifty-percent" ~intel, so that would be nice, but might be too big of a dream.

Two that I found
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230778

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230988
•less ram, much larger screen, weaker powerful cpu(?), new, not onboard gfx. leaning toward this one.

Thanks

If I may ask why a laptop..School, work, *something else*?

I think that 2nd one is roughly as good as it can get..
Tho I would never recommend a laptop, I would HIGHLY recommend a normal desktop computer.

If you're willing to sacrifice the bigger screen, you could look into customising the Vaoi Fit 14E - you could get a 740m and 3337u with 6GB RAM for $700, then use educational discount if you can (not sure what it is in us, but it's 10% here).

#2 School/travel/potentially work
#3 looked good but still favoring the second one in the OP. it's the second choice so far, though.

Well, from what I've just skimmed through the second laptop's 610m is completely pointless. The HD4000 available on the i5-3230M is actually going to outperform it in most cases. I would check that out for yourself (just searching for hd4000 vs 610m on google will give some results).

EDIT: also, having the 610m will increase power consumption and heat generation.
