#39 Habib banned in TF2 General Discussion

Disregard RGL drama, we have a much larger crisis on our hands:
AimIsADick is getting +fragged?!

#4 Memtest86 errors in Hardware

It should be noted that it's not a bitflip, the bit is supposed to be 1 but is 0 in all three cases.

Since this only happens for a single address then it's very likely that the bit at that address is simply dead.
In that case you can only remove the affected stick, and either run with just 8GB from now on or buy a replacement.

However, I'd like to point out something else.

CPU Temperature Min/Max/Ave 45C/98C/56C

98°C is extremely concerning, especially compared with the other one.
Unless the file you uploaded is corrupted or memtest86 somehow managed to get a wrong readout, or the sensor itself is dying (also extremely concerning) something went very wrong with cooling for a moment. Just a moment though, considering the average.

#17 Headset mic picking up my audio in Hardware
jimmijIf you mean using the speakers as audio output and using the headset mic as in, I just tried that and my friends cant hear my audio this way.

Unplugging speakers changes nothing.

Ok, this is obviously weird, since it's usually the other way around, but it's technically a solution.

Also, thanks to all the testing we know at least that the microphone cable seems to be picking up sound from the headphone cable. I've got no idea how or why this only happens with some software though.

#11 Headset mic picking up my audio in Hardware

So I'm assuming you're not using the speakers currently? Does it happen when you do use them? Also, just for fun, does anything change when you unplug them?

For an actual potential fix, try setting recording device to separate.

#9 Headset mic picking up my audio in Hardware
jimmijWhen i turn spotify all the way up they cant hear it at all. But a video on youtube through chrome they already hear at normal volume. Also there is a physical mute button on the headset and when I press it my friends cant hear my voice but they can still hear themselves through my mic.

Let's apply some logic here: Since it's aux, not USB, the physical mute button should physically disconnect the mic.
So the signal really shouldn't be coming from the mic.
Which means either the cable is picking it up somewhere, or it's software.
Considering it happens only with some programs, it reeks of a software issue.
Though you can try unplugging the mic and see what happens. Might need a dummy plug to trick the software into thinking there's still a mic attached, depending on where the software issue happens, and if you're using the front panel it could still be the wiring between the panel and the chip that's picking things up, so I urge you to use the inputs/outputs at the back of your mobo, at least for testing, but if it still happens regardless then it's most likely software.

Any interesting audio settings/software that could have loopback enabled?

#97 Thank You Letter to RGL in TF2 General Discussion

First of all, "I don't like this rule/think it's unfair/whatever so it shouldn't be applied" is not what admin discretion means.
The rule is "don't upload demos multiple times, get banned."
It's not "... unless we really like the excuse you came up with."
You can argue all you want that you think the specifics of the rules (number of infraction/ban lengths) should be different, but it 100% applies here. It applied to everyone else, so it also applies to antlers. There is no bonus for coming up with the most plausible, the most tearjerking, or the most entertaining excuse.
You can not go down the rabbit hole of "oh, he's probably trustworthy so we'll just believe him." The moment cheating-related decisions become a matter of just trusting people it all goes to shit. Or ban lengths being based on how popular someone is.

Secondly, the goal of the rule is to have all players record demos in all matches. Not occasionally. Always. Ignoring it until a player has missed an entire season's worth of requested demos, then banning for a different length depending on how likely you think it is that he cheats is a complete shitshow.

Thirdly, not enough demos being watched and not enough cheaters being banned is no excuse to stop recording and requesting demos. Yeah sure, if cheaters upload demos and still don't get banned that's bad. But if they don't upload demos (whether because they aren't requested anymore, or because there's rarely any penalties or none that really matter) and don't get banned isn't any better. It is simply more convenient for those who can't be arsed to record demos.

Last but not least:

Bob_MarleyLike I literally quit tf2 because I played a pub for five minutes during the pyro update :-/

That's very sad, but I don't really care. It's completely irrelevant.

There's really not many ways how you can interpret

Failure to Submit Demos

1st Offense: Warning
2nd Offense: 2-Weeks
3rd Offense: 3-Months
4th+ Offense: 1-Year

Not applying a rule because you like the guy and think it shouldn't apply to him is not interpreting a rule.
It's making an exception.

Like, I can see it when someone crashed and only got half a demo. There was an attempt.
But there is no demo at all. You can't interpret your way out of that.

He's literally the only caster I know of with this problem.
He got banned for two weeks a result.
He knew about the problem.
He still did not fix the problem.
He got banned again.

Yes, he paid money to play in the league. So did everyone else. Does that make them exempt from the rules?
And do you really want to go down the path where everyone who volunteers for RGL gets to ignore the rules? Do you really want moderators to ignore or bend the rules for their friends? I feel like there've been threads about this before.

sacsetsul the kind of german who'd execute villagers for being partisans/franc-tireurs after a friendly-fire incident. Have you considered antlers might just be clumsy and dumb about it and rgl could show here that it does care a bit for people that put the work in for the community, fucking up. i totally agree with bob marley here

I'm sorry, are you really trying to tell me RGL should make an exception because antlers is too "clumsy and dumb"?
Seriously?
Do you really think that should be a thing?
"Hey, I'm too dumb to follow the rules, can I please just ignore them?"
"Sure, you're a caster, anything for you!"

Bob_MarleyI feel like this isn't true though lol? People have definitely been asking RGL admins to use discretion in their decisions...

If admin discretion comes down to "please use admin discretion to not ban me even though I clearly broke a rule, think of the community" then it doesn't work.

Bob_MarleyThis is kind of a disingenuous reading of the situation... It's more like "The lowest scoring roamer in his division who no one suspects of cheating and contributes to the community by casting amateur matches in his free time in such a way that his config sometimes gets screwed up should not be banned for a whole season for a violating a rule that only exists to enforce other rules against cheating."

Antlers ~should~ record his demos, but fundamentally it doesn't really matter... Did anyone actually think that he was cheating? He got caught up in a rule that only exists to make it easier to enforce other rules. (If this rule didn't exist, real cheaters would have a much easier time saying "oopsies I don't have my demos" when directly requested. Otherwise, this rule would literally not need to exist. I highly doubt that the "random checks" are thorough...)

This is still "he's too bad to be cheating, so he should get a free pass on not submitting demos." That's not how that rule works.
I have never heard of a caster who failed to restore his playing config after casting so often. Like I said, after the first ban he could've asked literally anyone for a method of avoiding that and they would've told them. Hell, I could've told him, and I was only backup for a single cast. This is 100% on him.

Bob_MarleyIMO, the "general" solution to this:
1. If you miss three demo requests, you get banned.
2. If all of the demo requests are "random," the ban is for a week or two. (Enough to scare people into recording demos, but not enough that people will just quit and hopefully not kill teams.)
3. If any of the requests are because you are legitimately suspected of cheating, you get banned for the three months. (Enough to stop cheaters from playing)
4. If rgl admin read this, please be applied intelligently so people don't quit this dying game.

You're arguing for different rules for different people again. It is fundamentally unjust to have different punishments for the same infraction, just because someone accused you of cheating with no proof.

And he did get banned for two weeks. It did not scare him into recording demos. So what do you suggest should happen after that? A longer ban? Guess what, that's exactly what happened. A two week ban again? It didn't work the first time, why should it work now? No ban at all, just give up because surely he's not cheating if he's that bad?
None of those are solutions.

GeknaiirrGl SuCkS!! -> setsul posts something that i dont have the attention span to read that disagrees w rgl sucking -> internet fight between setsul and some randoms for 2 pages -> thread dies

Nah, most of the time I agree that it sucks and suggest that something should be done about it.
Then there's a discussion about how b4nny and RGL have an unbreakable grip on the entire NA TF2 scene so that no changes are possible.

"most normal people agree"
I see you have done a survey with one participant.
And anyone who disagrees with you is abnormal.

But these warnings weren't four years ago.
And we're back to "players who are clearly not malicious" aka "players who don't cheat in my opinion" shouldn't have to suffer penalties if they break "minor" rules.

Honestly, you might as well go back to good old traditional ostrakismos. Get everyone together in the city square and write the name of who you want to ban on a pottery shard.
