massive ping(?) spikes

So I've got this problem occasionally, not limited to any special time of the day or servers or even countries.

When it hits, everything freezes for a second or three, making me useless for the time. Sometimes I rubberband a second or so back when I unfreeze. For others it looks like I am standing still, occasional warping around happens, too.

What the spikes usually looks like on net_graph 4:

What it sometimes looks like:

What it normally looks like:

My ping spikes during this, even though the images don't reflect it due to it being taken from a demo.

Any ideas, or diagnostics?

Much appreciated!

are you using a crappy modem/router?
how many devices are connected to the modem/router?
are these devices doing something that might bother the m/r?
have you tried pinging the m/r? have you tried pinging the m/r with the connection cable unplugged?
have you checked if it's overheating?

Looks like the interface is dropping packets periodically.

Make sure you're connected over Ethernet to the router!

* Using my provider's thing, which is a speedport W 921V - not sure if thats good or crap or what
* PC, phone, laptop. turning phone off didnt help, and my mum wasn't around to use the laptop in this particular case
* no
* how? using wirelelss in the first place, but - how?
* issue has been around for a while, including during winter, so that's doubtful

ComangliaDo you have DSL, Wireless PtP or Satellite internet?

DSL to router thingy, and from there wireless. no, cable is not an option.

If the electrical in your house is fairly modern you should try a powerline adapter. LINK.

I would just make sure to get one that you can return to the buyer if it doesn't work. If your electrical is poor it could be no better than wireless.

Ouch you have it about as bad as it can be. You have a Digital Suck Line, and then probably dealing with inconsistent and more than likely full of interference wireless. About the only you could possibly do if you can't plug directly into a router, or bury fiber yourself to your house, is pray and hope it works.

To be fair, remodelling the place - which isn't exactly mine to remodel - is definitely kindaan option. But one that I refuse to use... for obvious reasons.

I'll try those power line plug things, maybe. Or just move. <.<

definitely the wireless is a big problem, ur m/r shouldn't pose a problem, apparently it's not a bad one

also if you want to ping ur m/r just open the windows command prompt and type:

ping -t <default gateway> (example ping -t 192.168.1.1)

to find out what's the default gateway, open command prompt, type ipconfig /all, look for Ethernet adapter Ethernet paragraph, and you should be able to find the Default gateway. I suggest you to try doing that both with connection cable plugged and without. I found out my provider was kinda aids like that
