Reduced performance in games

While I did see a thread on here about fps drops, it seems to not be applicable to my case right now. I used to be able to run the game with at least 300 frames rather consistently on DX9, and now while downgrading to DX8 and tweaking with my config I can only consistently hit 160-200, while sometimes dipping into the lower 100's.

I know this doesn't sound like a huge deal, but I have literally tried everything to fix my problem - defragged my drives, redownloaded the game, updated my graphics drivers, re-seated my gpu and ram, and there seems to be nothing unusual going on. No overheating or anything.

This also seems to be a thing on other games I play - just consistently lower fps where I have to lower my settings for whatever reason. I'll post my specs in here if necessary, just wondering if anyone has experienced something like this.

Thanks!

Atleast for TF2 I'm pretty sure DX8 is known for reducing performance. I have been running the game on DX8 for quite some time on the shittiest toaster and after switching to DX9 with some config tweaking I had a fps increase of like around 15-20.I know you said you lose frames when lowering settings, but deleting Steam browser cookies might or might not give you more frames aswell.

Yeah, I had only switched to DX8 as of a couple of days ago to see if there was any difference. I'll try deleting cookies.

I had the "same" processor as you (4440 @ 3.1) and i've learned a lot from it.
Don't use DX8- you're reducing your fps from that. Run dx9 with medium-low settings and try swapping out your config for an older one.

and why do you have a 480 with a fucking i5?
