Alt tabbing makes my ping spike

I was investigating some random ping spikes where whenever I joined a server my ping would spike to 300 automatically. I was getting frustrated when I noticed that whenever I alt tabbed out of the game, my ping would return to its original. When I alt tab back in, my ping would spike.

I swear to god my grandmother gives out better information when she needs tech support.

Could you provide us with any further info here or are we just supposed to play the guessing game until something magically works?

Ugh whatever, does it only happen in tf2 or in other games as well? For example: CS:GO?
Before you even bother replying try these things and see if it helps:

-Restart your router.
-Validate files.
-Check Firewall/AV settings for anything that could interfere with hl2.exe.

Also when you check your ping do you use the actual in-game scoreboard, net_graph 1-5 or status?
