Hello,

For several months now, around every few hours or so, my internet seems to completely stop; not disconnect, but freezes for around 5 - 10 seconds. I can't hear anyone in Mumble during this time, and anything that is happening in-game suddenly becomes frozen. Everything then resumes as normal for a few hours, then repeats.

Recently, this has been happening more and more often. I'm not downloading anything, nor is anyone using or downloading something on their computers. This problem seems to happen more often during various times of the day even when nothing has changed. I'm wondering if this is an issue with my router. Could it be overheating? Something to do with firmware? Just old? Or could it be the modem? My family's had this router & modem for around four years now. I'm thinking of resetting the router in hopes of upgrading the firmware, or simply just buying a new one.

Some info:
ISP: Cox
Speedtest during the lag (I usually get around 20down/20up when this doesn't occur): https://i.imgur.com/CxSugrZ.jpg
Router: Linksys E3000
Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB5101U USB Cable Modem
I'm also using ethernet.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

make sure you're not on a wireless connection, they suck.
make sure your chords are plugged in firmly.

i had the same issue in about march, i had the router for like 2-3 years but sometimes randomly it'd get hot, wouldn't crash or anything. after a while crashing started occurring for me but there wasn't any overheating.

IMO your best interest would be investing in a new router, mine stopped immediately after getting a new one.

good luck

edit: i may be completely wrong, just make sure to check around on google and other websites and research it pretty well before you go an invest in a new one

I had this problem several times, though it's not always been exactly the same. Sometimes I would get a drop for 5-20 seconds every few minutes, sometimes it would happen every half an hour, sometimes every few hours. I found out that I wasn't actually losing my connection for 5-20 seconds, but my ping would spike so high that games, Mumble and my browser would just get confused for a while because of the length of the spiking. I have called my ISP on every occasion and the problem goes away every time, though the people on the phone can't ever tell me what's causing it. It comes around about once every six months and my connection is otherwise extremely reliable and fast.

If you try pinging your ISP for a few minutes(there will be an IP on their website you can use for this), you might find out you're having the same problem. One of the milder ones yielded these result for me:
Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 974ms, Average = 44ms
Note that the average without the spikes is actually 15ms, sometimes the spikes would be as bad as three seconds. It's also peculiar that no packets actually get lost, they sometimes just need an inordinate amount of time to come back. I hope it helps, good luck.
