Velocity snip off Jarrett; glue on sighguy

November 22, 2018

After a disappointing 5-4 loss to Mentality eSports, Velocity eSports have parted ways with their longtime Demoman Jarrett, and have brought on sighguy in tandem.

Jarrett has played on the Velocity eSports core for six straight seasons, starting from Season 24 when the roster was known as Six Apes. Before then, the Demoman was most known for competing with Running w/ Scizors from Seasons 20 to 23. Now without a team, Jarrett is looking to cast matches of the upcoming ESEA Invite playoffs.

Meanwhile, sighguy is coming off a fifth-place finish with Ascent. Like his predecessor, he has likewise built chemistry with Skye and Rekuso on an previous iteration of Running w/ Scizors — this time from Season 27 — as Pocket Soldier.

Team captain shamoo shared with us the reasons behind the Demoman swap.

It was something we discussed for a few weeks and ultimately decided to do based on what we thought would be better for the team. Obviously, it wasn't an easy decision; Skye and Rekuso have all played a significant amount of seasons with him and I was on my fifth in a row with him, but teams’ needs change, and we felt like we weren't a great fit anymore. He's a great player, as well as a great teammate, and we all wish him the best.

Jarrett also shared his perspective on his team with us, discussing internal tensions and his own thoughts on the matter.

From the middle of the season there was a lot of tension within the team (that didn't have to do with me), and the thing that we did to make people happy was change to a hyper-aggressive playstyle. It wasn't my preference but I was down to attempt it. As we were playing, it was made obvious that the thin line between getting aggressive and feeding was not really recognized IMO, and my attempts to get the team more coordinated with our aggression and add some discipline to our calls was disagreed with.

I assume this created a new tension as weeks went on, as my Steam messages from the 3 people that created the team majority that voted me out are only full of connect strings and "Do we have scrims today?", so I was relatively unaware of exactly how upset people were with how I was playing. From my perspective, I was either "not following up" (where I think I was playing normally), or going in deep only to ultimately trade and not be effective on my class.

After our Gullywash match, I got cut through WhatsApp the day after, surprisingly. I think this situation was handled really poorly through a lack of communication, since I didn't even have a chance to tell people my perspective. Sigh is good but it will difficult from him to live up to what they want out of a player, because I think what they want out of a player is honestly a perfect scenario and not realistic.

Velocity eSports' roster for the ESEA Season 29 Invite playoffs will be:

  • Scout: shamoo
  • Scout: bo4r
  • Roamer: Rekuso
  • Pocket: speedy
  • Demoman: sighguy
  • Medic: Skye

It's honestly sad to see Jarrett leaving Velocity because of how long he's been part of the team for and how good he is on demo with his 200 IQ trap. I also hope sigh will bring why they cut Jarrett for to the team.

I played with Jarrett for multiple seasons in Highlander, and I am his friend. I would stay up with this guy until 3 in the morning to hear him talking about HIGHLANDER. How he wanted to get better. Constantly doing demo reviews. He would always be practicing his DM on top of that. There was a period of time where I spent practically four seasons straight trying as hard as I could to play on an ESEA team with him. I could never imagine how great of a teammate he would be to have. His maincalling was magical, he's a playmaker, smart player, and an extremely nice guy. He literally solo raised the bar for me to what an amazing teammate could actually be like.

Sigh has better DM. That is literally it. If you read arekk's post for why he was cut from Froyotech it was literally because he was too passive and didn't listen to their input to improve as a player. I am making no effort to discredit sigh's ability as a player. I think he is amazing, but the reasoning for cutting Jarrett for "not being aggro" and then picking up sigh is honestly stupid. This is such a band-aid fix and it's gonna help little to none. Again no discredit to sigh. After playing with him on LAN he is an amazing player. He just needs a team that plays around him. This is not that team.

This is honestly super frustrating to read about. This guy was dedicated to your team for SEASONS on end and I know for a fact he would be willing to listen to any of your advice. You simply gave up on your teammate - who never gave up on you - and cut him off. I understand and apologize for the extra aggression which is due to Jarrett being my friend. But this is mega pussy shit.

I don't know why you're throwing around the fact you played with jarrett for so long as if you know what the better decision would be,especially with 0 knowledge of what our team environment has been this season and last season. Me,skye and rekuso have all played with him for 2+years total, and all in 6's. Not to imply his maincalling is bad but you've only played with him on a team in highlander, and highlander maincalling is different from 6's so i don't know how you can judge what his calling is like in 6s in an actual non-pug invite team setting. This is all opinionated anyway, and while i felt like his calling was more in line with what people wanted at the end of the season, people disagreed and still wanted sigh.

I get hes your friend, but i didn't play 2 years with him and not become his friend,we didn't just week 5 decide "lets cut jarrett",we felt like anytime we said anything to him it was met with disagreement or just plain "your wrong" type responses and it created an impasse. Disagreements about how to play aren't bad but when its 5v1 in that regard, then yeah the 1 should probably relent for the sake of the team, and we felt that never really happened. Its always possible the 1 could be right but if it creates an environment where no ones having fun playing that way then the team just isn't a good fit for everyone together, and that's what happened.

Jarrett's my friend as well and this is gonna be my only response since replying anymore with specifics from other teammates sides of things is just gonna turn into badmouthing him unnecessarily,so i can appreciate defending your friend if you feel he got unfairly treated, but please understand my response in defending my friends for making this decision, regardless of what my stance was/is on cutting him,so please don't take it in an aggressive way either.

The goal was to go to Lan. It would have given us more time to create chemistry and for the rest of the dudes to reallly really grind off the rust. Once Lan became iffy we decided to do matches only. I could have left alot earlier in the season but I believed(lol) and I wouldn't have stayed if the enviornment wasn't enjoyable. Even though we got reverse 5-4d by omni and always scapegoated show, we did show some promise against the 3rd and 4th place team.I'm very sure we all enjoyed this season even though it didn't go nearly as well as we had expected. But I got an offer from velocity at the end of the season and at this point I believe I'm atleast a top 3 demo in ESEA, behind brother Cyrus, and always perform. Also 8K hype.

Fuck. I've been a big Velocity fan the past few seasons and loved watching Jarrett. Will continue to watch wherever he ends up.
