http://kotaku.com/ea-officially-reveals-star-wars-battlefront-ii-single-1794355889

ea and dice are re-making the original star wars: battlefront II that came out on ps2 in 2005 after the flop that was star wars: battlefront

looks like they're getting a lot right with this one with:
- bringing back space battles
- ability to play all eras (so clone wars, galactic civil war, and sequel trilogy)
- singleplayer campaign
- more heroes

i'm really excited to play this when it drops into open beta because i really miss the clone wars era clones versus droids battles and space battles, they said it's gonna drop sometime in november this year

yeah, the abortion that was star wars: battlefront has me skeptical, but i'm hoping they're actually just re-vamping the 2005 battlefront II

the301stspartanWHY DON'T THEY FINISH THE 99% FINISHED STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT III ???

10 years old tech at this point.

Also everything must use Frostbite because EA owns DICE.
Mass Effect had working facial animations, but they used Unreal Engine.
Why pay for licensing an engine when you own one?

So then you get a partial port if anything at all, CyberScan for all faces and then because CyberScan is great they decided to leave everything as is or only do minimal manual work, and even then only Aliens got the BioWare treatment, the rest got outsourced EA Bucharest. No offense to EA Bucharest or whoever did it, but with half old and half untested technology I'd rather have the guys who got it to run the first time and then worked on it for 10 years in charge of fixing the fuckups instead of whoever was available at the time.

Point is EA is really good at making decisions that are perfectly sound from a business perspective and save them lots of money and lead to games always being on time and within budget, but also utter garbage.

I am rather skeptical of this one too.

But they're porting (remaking) Battlefront 2 which is older still, so why not just give the same treatment to the almost finished sequel?

If the rumors are true, basically all of the content and game design was done, so this would have been the perfect opportunity.

I'm not complaining if it's an actual 100% BF2 port, however.

i was super excited for the first EA battlefront. I played the beta and enjoyed it but ended up not getting the full game because it launched with like 3 maps on release. i might consider getting this next one if it actually has a decent amount of content in the game, but im not counting on it

I might consider it if it's neither:
-A frostbite remake of Star Wars Battefront with less content than a DLC of the original ones.
-Actually Battlefield: Star Wars.

Their first try went 0/2. Still not going to buy it if it's really just 10% of SWBF II on Frostbite. I'm fine with it being the same game again, then it's worth 50 bucks, but not if it's some 1 or 2 gamemodes, 3 maps shitshow.

SetsulThey are most definitely not porting it. Everything has to be redone.

Yes I know, but it still feels like a port to the customers. Now, if they have two of these games which they could use as a base for their remake, why wouldn't they go with the new never seen one that they know everyone wants.
Both games are presumably huge so they already have to develop much more content than for Battlefront EA , which makes it really weird for me that they would put this effort into a straight remake instead of a surefire success sequel.

I don't think their budget cares about how you feel.
It will cost them almost as much as a new game so how it feels for the customer is rather irrelevant.

A sequel is also not a surefire success.

No one knows how close BF 3 actually was to being finished, rumours are no confirmation.

If game modes were identical then it doesn't really make a difference what you base it on in that regard. If they changed anything then no one knows how well those changes would be recieved.

So this is the safe bet for 2 reasons:
1. While mechanically (including textures etc.) everything has to be redone, gameplay is fixed and proven to work.
2. No changes so you get the full nostalgia benefit.

?? No, how it feels for the customer is the difference between a successful game and Battlefront EA.

The fact that they have to redo everything is the very reason a straight remake is weird to me. They can't justify development costs of a game this scale with nostalgia sells only.
Battlefront 2 had more content than any shooter we have today. This must be a huge project. The same people who would buy it for nostalgia know about Battlefront 3 also and would most likely buy a new game in the same style.

Yes sure, it's safer to remake it 100% and change nothing except visuals, but the hype and interest this will generate seems disproportionate to the scope of the project of making it, as opposed to making an actual sequel.
By the way, it's not gonna be a 100% remake with "no changes" if Kylo Ren is in it obviously. So why not go all the way and use the gameplay from 3, or even if they don't, market it as 3?

Either way I hope that I'm wrong about the hype and, if it's a genuine Battlefront feel, it will be a huge success and everyone will start playing this shit again. 2 was definitely one of the best shooters I ever played. I hope they won't fuck it up.

EDIT: Ok, as a side question after reading the article in the OP: Where does it actually say anywhere that they are remaking Battlefront 2? I'm only reading that they are making Battlefront (EA) II, aka a sequel to their failed game and that it has single player and space battles. Nowhere does it talk about a remake or that they have any intentions to make a new game with all the content of Battlefront 2?

Whether or not it feels like a port does not affect the fact that it is not a port.
Neither does it affect the cost.

Correct, but like I said: If the gameplay in BF III was unchanged you wouldn't even be able to tell which one it was based on. If it was changed then they have no idea how well it would work. So if they are going to go back to old BF mechanics BF II is the safe bet.

the301stspartanYes sure, it's safer to remake it 100% and change nothing except visuals, but the hype and interest this will generate seems disproportionate to the scope of the project of making it, as opposed to making an actual sequel.

Since they do have to redo all models and visuals they will obviously include the new stuff. More hype.
Gameplay see above.
People complained about the reboot because it didn't feel like Battlefront and more like Battlefield.
How are they supposed to know that the new gamplay was based on Battlefront III, since that was never released?
The only way to get people to shut up about "but BF I/II were different" is to actually use gameplay just like that.

Nowhere.
Roman numerals + space battles + campaign = remake confirmed.
Rumours of galactic conquest. God, I loved that.
Contains 99% hype and 1% facts.

Goal 13 million copies.
Sold >14 million.
Massive failure.

I think if EA has one of these failures every year they are set.

does anyone actually play this?
ive been grinding the hell out of this, looking for some friends

found some clan dudes who scrimmed the 2005 and 2015 battlefront
i dont know if people know but the 8v8 strike mode has absolute no lag and its just downright better (no bs heros and vehicles)
