I think my PC is acting up

Ever since I've moved to school with my computer, I've been experiencing miserable framerate drops in both tf2 and overwatch. In overwatch I was getting 50ish fps on average during this last time that I was playing and numbers were dipping down frequently into the 20s. TF2 was also rather bad with an fps config, with frequent dips below the 50s, I'd estimate that I usually get 80fps or so on average. Also, my mouse seems to be acting up as well. Had one or 2 times during gameplay where the sensor would just lose track of movements and seemingly skip inputs.

Is it just time for me to upgrade, or is there something that I can possibly do to diagnose what may be the problem?

PC Specs

  • AMD A10 6800K APU (I plan on upgrading this eventually but I don't think I've ever had framerate drops this bad)
  • Radeon R9 390 OC edition
  • 16gb of RAM
  • 650W Corsair Power Supply that I had just installed last month
  • Razer Deathadder Chroma
  • Some HP 60hz monitor @ 1280 x 720 Resolution

Any help would be much appreciated

SetsulOverheating?

I'll investigate that later. Dust may be a factor in this as well. I know that I need to do a dust clean-out so I may be buying some stuff to get that done

So oddly enough, the frame drops that make games unplayable have gone away for the most part. Haven't even opened up my pc to see if dust was a factor. However, In my task manager, I see that my L1 cache value is significantly lower than my L2 cache value (192 KB for L1 and 4 MB for L2).

Could this be the problem? Or is it just my cpu is very bad? In my resource monitor, all cores appear to be under 100% load when in game. Even now as I'm typing this I have soundcloud music playing in chrome while playing tf2 alongside an fps counter I'm not getting a ton of major frame drops. Any insight/help is much appreciated

No.

KonceptOr is it just my cpu is very bad?

Yes, but not bad enough to cause what you're experiencing.

yeah, it looks like my temps are a bit higher than they should be

when I'm upgrading my pc I'll look for a better cpu cooler than the stock one

Maybe you should tell me what the temps are.
Sorry, but since you weren't sure whether L1 size could change I'm not entirely trusting your judgement on this one either.

Did you try turning it off, then turning it on again?

according to Open Hardware Monitor, my temps are hovering in the mid 30s during combat, with the max value listed at 39 degrees

also about the L1 thing, I'm honestly not very knowledgeable in areas like this, so I was simply asking if that could be a factor

SpyromancerDid you try turning it off, then turning it on again?

yes.

30s are actually way too low.
Afaik hwmonitor doesn't read the temperatures on that APU correctly.

should I try another source for getting temps? What would you recommend using?

Yes.
I don't care, realtemp, core temp, literally anything.

Apologies for the necro but I've figured out what was my issue. One of my intake fans wasn't plugged in properly so that would explain why I was having thermal issues. I also figured that simply bumping this one would be better than making a new thread

However once I had gotten all my stuff straightened out with getting the fan plugged in properly, my system straight up isn't booting. Power supply is working just fine and I'm relatively certain that I plugged everything into it that needed to be plugged in as well.

I know something is going right because some stuff on my motherboard is lighting up (including the power button on it) but when I press it nothing really happens. Is this likely an issue of something not being plugged in properly again? Or something else?

So you changed something, it doesn't boot at all anymore and that means it's fixed?
I'm not sure if I can follow that logic.

I tried replugging in my front case fan so that it would work (previously it wasn't connected all the way) and now when I try to power up my system no fans start

Have you considered the possibility that since it worked before and doesn't anymore you might've plugged it in wrong?

I'm looking at all of my connections now because I think that may actually be the issue. Hopefully as you mentioned it's an issue with something not being plugged in correctly and not something else

Alright. Looks like I have another problem. When my PSU is plugged in by itself (no cables plugged in), it doesn't seem to be turning on. The fan test works but I'm not entirely sure if it's dead.

However, when I plug in both plugs from my 24 pin connector, nothing happens. But when I unplug the smaller connection, the fans and lights on my motherboard come on and off in short intervals. The PSU fan also spins but I'm rather concerned that with both 24 pin connectors in, nothing happens.

I bought the PSU at the beginning of the year so I'll have to check if there's still a warranty on it. There was also a rebate that I sent in and it apparently hasn't been received yet, so I may be making a post in the PC build thread soon

What do you mean the fan test is working but you're not sure it's turning on?
If the paperclip test works it's turning on.

Is it a modular PSU and you're mixing up the connections?
