Demoman: What should I know before lobby/PUG'ing?

Title says it all. My DM is OK, and my rollouts I'm working on. To start with I'd be picking HL games, and eventually I'd like to play 6v6. Pubs seem too chaotic for anything besides DM'ing, really, but I'd like to know what I should really be focusing on when going into an organized game because I feel alot of pressure is on the role as Demo. Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

edit: Could someone point me in the direction of some good Demoman POV's with perhaps some commentary/analyzing?

Staying alive and controlling space. If you are doing both then you are helping your team, if you're doing neither you're a glorified civilian.

stay alive and deal damage. that is the main thing. if your dead then it halts your team from moving up and causes them to move back. just focus on doing damage, dont try and get the kills, you'll end up overextending and getting yourself killed when you try and get the last 50 damage on a weak opponent, it's better to let cleanup do it's job in most cases.

Pay attention to what the rest of your team is doing--if you're by yourself there's a good chance you're overextending (or they're massive vaginas, but since you're new, play more passive and stay alive, until you get enough experience to know what's going on). Try to stay with your medic, but behind the pocket and don't take too much unnecessary damage. If you do all of the above and do something resembling a rollout (ie not walking to mid) you're already better than most lobby demos.

So are there specific times when the Demo does lead? A Kritz situation?

Is a demo still the main sentry-buster in a HL game, or is it a focus-fire situation like 6's?

Yeah, a lot of the times the demo will get the kritz. It's best if you also have another combat class with you though--demo is relatively weak if you're caught out in a 1v1 situation.

Demo is good versus sentries, and if one is nearby and you're pushing you should probably focus it, but other classes are perfectly capable of dealing with sentries too. Sentries aren't as big of an obsacle in HL/6s as they are in unorganized pubs--they're not that hard to take down but they are effective to waste ammo and absorb damage away from the rest of the team.

I think you have most of the general information that you need. If you've already conquered staying alive, controlling space and knowing the roll outs then you might want a mentor to talk with in mumble to get more specific

plus its lobbies we're talking about here... if you know the map and can do the roll out, not many people will complain, if they do, they just complain about everyone.

HL lobbies are a great, low stress/skill place to get your feet wet in comp, however, when you feel more confident I'd highly suggest doing a newbie mix and moving on to #tf2mix on irc. 6s lobbies have poor to no communication and lots of trolls so you never really get to play a realistic 6s game, sadly.

well communication is actually a problem atm, as my headset/mic just went out on me. Thanks for your input everyone!

Well, I've not ventured into lobbies or anything yet, so "staying alive" right now is "staying alive in pubs", which with 24 ppl still tend to challenge me, having only melee & projectile weapons. I've noticed though if I tend to plan ahead my positioning by placing stickies (or spamming) where opponents approach from (like if I need to reload or something), it keeps me alive longer.

the best thing to do is play lobbies and try to never die

nobody in lobbies really gives a shit about their demo unless they cant do a rollout, so youre not going to be protected from the other team as you would in a scrim

work on getting comfortable in midfights and pushes this way
